Im looking at a few engines for my MKV Golf 2.0TDI 4MOTION. Engine code is BKD. Am I correct in assuming that any 2.0 BKD will fit and the 4Motion is same as standard engine except for the obvious transfer box for 4 wheel drive?

That is a sensible assumption, just the transmission will be different, but this will increase the cost of an engine out job as you will need to carefully disconnect the propshaft from the gearbox first.

For the price of buying a engine and swapping it, why not buy a different car?

So having got Xmas over, I gave my Mk5 to a trusted old school mechanic. After 1 afternoon looking over it, he has gave me his opinion on what issues are. Coolant loss has been put down to seep in waterpump. Also oil leak (again) in transfer box. Misfire symptoms he believes is timing issue. He said that replacing cambelt and waterpump should sort this out and gasket seal for transfer box. So roughly £450 all in should get car up and running.
