Golf v6 vs r32
Discussion
Obviously the mk4 r32 is a better car here BUT is it worth 3x the money?
Good 4motions are selling from anywhere between 1k and 2.5k, whereas 5.5k gets you a high mileage r32.
Which would you buy and why?
I don't really rag my cars around I generally look for
comfort (both do this in spades)
legroom (both do this in spades)
Noise (both have nice noise, r32 does this stock)
good headlights (r32 have better headlights, but 4motions can come with xenon too)
I cant help but think you get a snazzy bodykit, nice wheels and 40hp more for 3x the price...

I had an mk4 R32 as a daily driver for 12 months. It was a nice car, sounded excellent, guzzled fuel and wasn't overly fast. I only got rid when my commute got too long for the economy.
My friend had a v6 4 motion. It was more comfortable (less harsh suspension), wasn't as fast, sounded almost as good, didn't handle as well.
Basically everything you would think the differences were, they were.
The v6 4 motion is a very capable car, and at the price is a very good buy, if you can put up with 20-25mpg.

I hate to mention to D word but does depreciation come into this, I guess it depends how long you are looking to keep it.
The R32 is likely to depreciate slower, so the cost to own will likely be less in the long run, if you hold onto it long enough and keep it in good nick you might even see it start to appreciate.
The mk4 shape is one of the more popular with all people VW, in my opinion - Mk1 loved, Mk2 loved, Mk3 not so much, Mk4 first of the "potential modern classics" Mk5/6/7 too new
Just a consideration

I've had both cars and I can tell you without a doubt you will be more happier if you get the R32, the sound of the car is awesome, look for an R32 with leather wing back seats they are really comfortable and hold you in your place.
A thing to look out for is water in the boot around the battery area, a common problem with these 2005 to 2007 models are water gets in either from underneath or through the rubber seals of the boot door.

I had a mk4 v6 4motion. What a woeful car. Nice engine although not a fast car but everything else was shocking.
It was the worst handling car I have ever owned, rattled like anything and they are creaky, clonky cars. The worst steering ever didn't inspire confidence and neither did the sensors that kept playing up.
Mine was a 1 owner car from new when I bought it at 90k miles and the guy I bought it off maintained it very well but it was still a moneypit. Plenty of better cars out there.
My friends one which was also owned from new, (he worked at a well known car superstore) was rusting on the roof and boot when he sold it at 9years old. Not great at all.

My dad had one from new in 2003, black with xenons and black leather. I used to drive it regularly and the way I would describe it was lazy. It was a comfy cruiser and my dad still talks about that car as it was comfortable and that is after having other nice cars (911s, S3, 335d). My friend also had a mk4 R32 a few years ago. I had a shot and I found it so disappointing. The throttle was the strangest I have ever felt. If I can remember correctly it was super sensitive and the final 50% of travel did not seem to do anything. Sounded amazing with a miltek exhaust and I do like that shape.
I think the V6 4 motions have increased in value over the past 3 years along with about everything else. I do like how it was so understated like the original VR6s with just a different set of 16” wheels, twin exhaust pipe and slightly bigger front splitter. It’s a shame VW do not do a similar model now.
