Battery conditioner for VW

My M in L has a diesel Polo she doesn't use very much and the battery is always going flat.
Will a VW take an Accumate style charger through the cigarette lighter or does it need to attach to the battery?

If the lighter socket is permanently live (does it work with the ignition off?) then it should be fine.
