Audi A4 Avant or...
Discussion
Hi there
I am looking to buy a family wagon and wondering what suggestions for an engine I should go for with an A4 Avant. We would be doing under 12,000 miles a year so petrol is my thinking. However the economical diesel could be a more sensible choice given we don't live in the countryside and it would do more miles to the gallon, especially with the shorter journeys etc.
My budget is around £10k and ideally around the 2008-2010 era. The other cars I have been thinking about is the 5 series. However my wife would like a 4 x 4 which means only one car for her would suffice (deep breath now) a BMW X5 (yes a small loan would be needed to buy a 2008/09 model - however I do like them too!
Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated.
Many thanks chaps.

Er, Audi A4 Avant Quattro perhaps. Solves the 4x4 problem or does your wife want a Chelsea tractor?
A Chelsea tractor so she can be higher up, feel more safe. Also the estate is a slightly longer car too which puts her off when it comes to parking on roads where there are always such tight spaces!I went from an E61 (2007) 520d Touring to an A4 Esate (2010) 2.0 TDi (think it was the 130bhp model)
Beemer had more comfort, and from what I remember, a smoother oil burner than the A4.
Beemer experienced the common problem with the failed rear suspension pump. After a few weeks of warnings about the self levelling system it decided to go squat at the back. Repair cost was around 1500quid for new pump and suspension bladders, but only ended up paying 700 quid after a cockup on the quote from them. 30k miles over 18 months selling at just under 150k miles, and averaged about 45mpg, getting just above 50 on a motorway run if I was sensible.
A4 felt a little more sprightly, and a bit more steering feel. Nicer cabin and toys but not as much space. Only failure was a DPF differential valve summat (im not that mechanically minded) at a cost of 150quid to replace. Better mileage averaging over 50mpg, and could get high fifties on a sensible motorway run. Again I put about 30k miles on it taking it up to 130k.
Put both of them in front of me now and I really don't know which one I'd choose again. A4 looked better and had better gadgets. Beemer was more comfortable for wafting around. Neither pressed any excitement buttons.
