My A6 3.0 bi-tdi has averaged 30.4mpg over its 10,000 mile life to date.

On a long run i can get 46mpg, short runs 24mpg.

Does anybody know how the average mpg meter works.

Sometimes in the morning going down our road the car is on 6mpg average for ages whist the screen with the moving bar shows well above 40. It seems to take an absolute age to increase into double digits. Other times the car is on 22 which seems odd seeing as i dont do anything different.

Yesterday, the average showed 18 yet the needle was well above 40 for a few miles. As it rose slowly, reaching 29 at the end of the 7 mile trip, every time the throttle was pressed the average dropped very quickly yet on a trailing throttle it rose far more slowly than it fell - hope this makes sense?

Has anyone any advice or help on this?

Wondering if there may be a fault and need to part company with the car?

If it's like any other VW based car there will be a number 1 or 2 somewhere in the display if my memory is correct.

One of the averages is trip average so it resets every time you start the car, which is why you get big variances over short distances. The other average is a long term one that will reset every 5 or 10,000 miles or thereabouts.

There is a long term and short term and they are different as you say.

Query was i suppose more of why the dramatic difference on the short term - would expect fairly similar readings on the same journey?

Also, on short term display, why would the average drop say 2 mpg within a 50 yds or so on throttle and then take half a mile or so on a trailing throttle to get back to the same mpg? Distances not accurate but hopefully helps the point i am trying to make.

Averaging a consumption rate is hard to get your head around.

If you accelerate hard at 10mpg for 1 mile and then coast off throttle at 100mpg for 1 mile, you don't average 55mpg.

You have driven 2 miles and used 0.11 gallons which is 2/0.11 = 18mpg.

Only way to know the true accurate figures is to fill her up to brin, reset your trip counter, then next time you fill up, work out how many gallons you put in and divide your trip counter figure with that amount of gallons.

I did that with my Audi 1.8 petrol and I was getting 30 to 31mpg, now temperature has dropped and heater is on a lot more I believe my mpg has dropped below 30. It's frustrating, but I've come from a 1.2 fiesta where I was getting 40mpg to a a3 sport back with double the power, a 10 or so mpg drop is not so bad.
