1.2 TSi Engine
Discussion
Just looking at getting an Ibiza 1.2 TSi 105bhp for a runaround. Its a 2014 model FR Manual 5dr with 22,000 miles. I've not had any experience with the 1.2 tsi engines so just interested to hear some opinions and views as per reliability etc. I had a 2010 Ibiza Cupra 1.4 tsi with the DSG box a few years back and that was a horror. Very heavy oil consumption and the DSG was never right. It also ate coil packs. In terms of oil consumption and engine reliability is the 1.2 tsi any better? Certainly from looking around the interweb there seems to be far fewer horror stories relating to the 1.2 tsi than the 1.4 tsi.
I had a 2010 1.2 TSI ibiza (the 105bhp "ecomotive", before they rebadged them as the FR, which is a bit of a joke!) from new for 4 years.
In that time:
1) turbo failed (replaced under warranty when ~6 months old)
2) coil pack failed (~18 months old)
3) chain tensioner issues, resulting in post-warranty good will from dealer / Seat UK (no cost to me). This had been reported to dealer after about 24 months, but noises came and went, and the dealer said the usual "TADTS" - which was partly true...).
That said, it was a great little car, none of the issues cost us anything to sort, and it was a new engine at the time (was the first year Seat used that engine /turbo/ SC combination).
ETA: Mine was a manual, driven moderately for 45k miles, mostly around town, probably 20% of miles at national speed limit (motorway / DC). It was a nice, comfy car, a little unrefined at speed (noisy engine at high revs), enough "go" until 50mph, then everything you'd expect from a 105bhp petrol engine...
The main issues reported frequently with the 1.2 were the chain tensioners. They were made of chocolate. Don't know if the 2014 model would have the newer part?

We've had 3 1.2 Tfsi engined cars, all the wife's and all Skoda Fabia Estates. Never had any issues with any of them. The current one is the latest with DSG and it matches the engine very well.
The little engine revs and pulls sweetly and provides sufficient go. By way of comparison, up until last night I was driving a 981 Cayman, and I find the little Fabia perfectly acceptable in normal traffic conditions.
