Hi Guys,

I took my A6 (C7) into my local dealer yesterday for a service, but also asked them to check out an oil leak and suspected worn engine mount which was spotted during an MOT back in April.

On collecting the car, I was told that it requires 2 engine mounts (these are hydraulic?) as they are leaking, to the cost of £836. I was also told the 'upper sump' was leaking and needed to be removed, cleaned and resealed, apparently the engine has to be removed for this and I have been quoted £5500.

The dealer went on to say that due to where the engine mounts are they would absorb the cost of that into the sump work, so would charge £5500 to do everything.

I'm a bit stuck now as that amount of money is a hell of a lot, so I'm trying to look at other options. I'm wondering what other peoples opinions are on this sort of work. The car drives absolutely fine, and I don't even have to top up the oil that often. It has currently done 110,000 miles.

I'm going to enquire around a few specialists after christmas, but currently I'm just after any opinions I can get.

I'm in work at the moment but I can post screen shots of the audi cam when I get home later.

Cheers, Ben.

There's Auditechnik in Gloucester who get rave reviews, might be too far for you though.

Would also recommend APS in Brackley if that's close to you?

I think I'd be shouting at Audi a bit more for a goodwill contribution - these engines are normally bombproof.

The engine mounts? I had a pair changed at my local garage for £160 labour (I think they just fancied a change from fixing farmer's pickups), but they aren't cheap parts to buy.

Bodgetastic, but if you are struggling for the money to pay for an engine out job, http://www.frost.co.uk/oyltite-stik-seals-oil-leak...

How much oil is it leaking?
Until it got to a litre every 1,000 miles I'd not even be worried about it.

Oil at £15 a litre is much cheaper for the next 100k miles (£1,500) than an engine out job at £5.5k

Audi have a tolerance of 1 litre per 600 miles before they even recognise oil consumption issue so a leak at those levels wouldn't even worry me. Least you know where its coming from.
Only if it got much worse would I be worried about it in all honesty.

It is leaking but it's hardly the Exxon Valdez, and some of that will be the fluid from the engine mounts escaping.

Steam-clean it, see where the leak is and consider the oyltite if the source is accessible.

Unless it's pouring out oil or the mounts are knocking leave them alone. In the grand old scheme of things it's relatively minor wear on a car that's done a few miles.

£5k for a minor oil leak? Simply not worth fixing.

Cheers guys.

It isn't leaking that much at all, and the mounts aren't knocking. Just knew there were a few guys here who knew their stuff. So wasn't sure to just leave it in case it could go catastrophic!

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll just leave it.

If the mounts do bother you (thumping in gear changes or moving P - R - D for example) ebay is full of cars being broken and hydro mounts go for sub-£50 each.

I'd get someone else to take a look to see where that leak really is, wouldn't surprise me if they're completely wrong on that front.

A very late reply - but my 2012 A6 3.0 TDI looks just like the Sump Leak pic here, and I'm a bit curious: did you, Ben, just leave it? What happened? Is the car still rolling? Many thanks in advance!
