I've always fancied a Superb. Mrs Pothole is on an economy drive, though. Is the 1.4 an overstressed, wheezy, gutless thing of misery?

Which one are we talking about? We've got the 150bhp ACT (cylinder on demand) 1.4 in our 2 year old Leon ST and I think it's a brilliant engine, I'd describe it as "warm hatch" performance so plenty pokey enough for family transport and the 6 speed box it's mated to is a peach. We also test drove an Octavia with the older 140bhp variant and that was pretty good as well.

I've been wondering about this one too. If you're buying new, the 150 BHP engine will be fine, its putting out the same power with more torque than my old Passat 1.8T which was probably only a tiny bit lighter and that car always went well enough. The earlier 1.4 only made 122 BHP, which I don't think is enough in a car the superb's size.

Can't afford new.

This one which is listed as 125bhp

My bike makes that much power but weighs a tad less I would guess.

Looks a big car for the engine. My Son has a Golf with the 1.4tsi and that goes well enough, although you wouldn't call it a performance car.

Funny how things change, the original Gti had less power...

It's a torquey motor, about 180lbft/250nm
I've been driving a Golf with the same motor, stunning engine with incredible refinement and economy, despite being new and not yet loosened up I'm averaging 50mpg but that's on flat, very lightly trafficked roads.

One thing you should note is the marked difference in performance between Normal and Sport modes, it's mapped for economy but in Sport it really comes alive, if you try one be sure to use Sport mode as well as Normal

Problem kind of solved by my Mother dying and paying off some debts for me meaning I've now ordered a new Seat Ateca, with the same engine. Felt quite perky on a test drive.
