I'd love an A4 estate tdi of 2005-2007 vintage, but they have the 2.PD engine which is well documented as being one of the biggest cock ups in VAG history.
The 105PS and 130PS 1.9 PD's however are the ones to have, apparently. Only cracked injector looms to deal with (and I've already done one in a Golf I had), as opposed to cracked cylinder heads, oil pump failure and troublesome Siemens injectors to name but a few on the 2.0.

So my question is - how different are the engines in construction and how hard would it be to transplant one into the B7 A4?

Thanks in advance
Cad

Possible of course but not cheap to do, labour wise.

Just buy an earlier A4 if you're obsessed about the 1.9?

Granted. But I much prefer the look of the later one in every respect (back, front, interior).

As far as labour goes, I'd be doing it myself. Just curious to know how much needs changing other than the block. Loom rewiring?

Probably easier to swop the bumpers/interior from a B7 into a B6! Seen a few conversions done.

There is no way the engine loom/ecu is the same so you'd need to rewire that as a minimum. If you have a longitudinal 1.9 the mechanicals shouldn't be too bad I'd say. Obviously it's much easier if the donor engine has its loom and all ancillaries etc.

Or buy a 3.0tdi B7 instead?

Not even close. You'll have to dribble about slowly in the petrol to get over 30 mpg. Into the 20s if you're pushing on,even worse in a quattro.

I couldn't get my 1.9 under 50mpg! Also had a 3.0tdi (A6) that averaged about 40.

Don't get me wrong ,the petrol is great. However in the real world where I do 25k+ a year, without a fuel card, I would only ever buy a diesel. Sadly I'm not a minted PH director who couldn't care less about running costs!

I did 120k miles in a Passat with the 2.0 PD. It was fine. Don't know why they have a poor reputation, as we had more issues on our fleet with the 1.9 than the 2.0.

Edited to add - the 2.0 is significantly more refined, too.

Audizine I think. Not easy with the external panels though as I recall the wings don't fit/line up without modification.

The siemens injectors are only on the 170, not the 140.

The 140 isnt a bad engine so long as you have a revision C head.

How many miles are you doing a year?

I would personally only run a diesel if I were doing ~30k+ The Petrol is just a nice option.

By the time you have spent the money and faffed around you could get an early seat exeo which is a b7 A4 with the newer CR engines and a seat badge on the front

This x 100.

I have a '13 Exeo Sport - leather, xenons, nav, 2.0 Cr 170. Circa 40k on the clock and it can't be worth more than £9.5k these days. By the time the OP has purchased said donor car + engine and messed about changing the engine over he'd probably be able to buy my car, thereby equalling a 6/7 year younger example with a much more modern engine.

I get that he prefers the look of the Audi but logically it makes no sense to buy an old audi and change the engine over to an even older audi.

This is the right answer. Hen's teeth in the A4, but a cracking engine.
