Hi All

Got my car back last week from a service and did a quick run from Reigate to Heathrow and back on Sunday morning. All on the motorway, not in any rush and for once got a clear run. Cruise on 70 all the way (60 mile round trip) with hardly any miles not on the motorway and I got just over 45mpg on the computer. Manual in 6th all the way - even in Eco mode!

I would have expected nearer 60 for that journey. I know the cold can affect consumption, but not by anywhere near that much surely?

Any thoughts? There was a faulty fuel sensor found and replaced. Have I got a dud perhaps?

That's just someone's (yours?) average fuel consumption which is what I would expect as average for a full tank, not for a low-consumption cruise on the motorway at a steady speed with hardly any acceleration or braking...

Maybe your duff fuel sensor they replaced was giving a duff mpg reading and now your car is reading true?

45mpg sounds more realistic than 60mpg

My ed35 gets 31mpg on the motorway so... Yeah your reading is pretty good tbh smile

That did occur to me as a possibility. If so, I'm ordering a new car in the next 6 months and that might make me lean towards a GTI over another GTD if the mpg isn't quite as impressive as I thought it was previously.

I'm getting about 33mpg average from my VRS 230 (same engine as GTi PP but with a bit more weight) but it will do mid-high 30s on a motorway run if kept at 70 or below. I can easily average 36 on my rubbish commute if the motorway leg is clear.

Had 42mpg on a 25 mile journey, but most of it was at 60mph due to the "smart" traffic management on the M6.

Our GTD is 18 months old and covered 17000 miles. MPG is very rarely over 50MPG on a long run. Day to day its 40-45 MPG. Very disappointed and justed ordered a Scirocco R as a replacement as the promised diesel economy just isn't there in reality.

Really? If I'm just driving to get somewhere, i.e. not driving it like a GT, then I've typically found it very easy to get late 50s. See this thread for others' experiences.

You may have had issues with either your car or your right foot ;-)

Don't put too much stock in the R's official figures either though!

Doesn't help that it's all too tempting to floor it whenever possible of course...

Don't have a heavy right foot. My BMW E90 330d turns in over 40 MPG and driven in exactly the same style. GTD does same MPG with less performance and hence find the GTD economy disappointing

From experience of VAG TDI engine's they get better as they get older. My old PD170 (OK it was Stage2 tuned) used to achieve 45-50mpg on runs from Crewe to Abington in Scotland which was mainly M6 and M74.

Once it hit 40k miles and I removed EGR. 55-60mpg,

I got my GTD in December. Since then I've covered 5000 miles and I've averaged 44 - 45 mpg. On a longer motorway run the best i've seen is 51.

In comparsion the 2014 Merc A200D that proceeded it achirved 50-51 average but had nothing like the punch of the GTD.
Both look poor compared to my old 2013 F30 320ED which never gave less than 55 and regularly achieved 60.

It didn't feel much slower than the GTD either despite being "only"163 bhp.

OP's figures sound normal to me. I've just got rid of mine after 37,000 miles and think I averaged about 48mpg overall from mostly motorway. I rarely saw above 50mpg on it, the brochure figures are completely unrealistic. In it's final days I was mostly doing short journeys and it was only getting about 40mpg, replaced with a much more fun BMW M135i which does 30mpg in the same conditions driving

Our GTI PP is averaging 30mpg as a tank average - those are measured figures from brim to brim fills. I suspect if I tried I could achieve 35mpg, but since 30 is a 100% improvement on my last car I'm more than happy with what I'm getting!

Worth noting that the in car display suggests I'm getting 33mpg, so as always it's worth pointing out the pointlessness of the dash displays as any sort of accurate measure.

Does your GTD with SCR (i.e. does it require filling with AdBlue occasionally)? If so that'll knock the economy a bit more
