Hi All,

Time to replace my OEM discs and pads on the A4. Audi have quoted me £383.84 for the rears and £436.01 for the fronts!!! nigh on £820 !!!!
Local indy has quoted £424.50 for all 4 and will use either Pagid or Brembo. Is it really worth getting the OEM on a 2011 2.0l Tdi A4 Black edition Avant? My thinking is not, however I'd appreciate any experience people have had with non-oem discs and pads.

Tanks in advance.
Richard.

Pagid and Brembo are both premium brands and are fitted as OE by quite a few top-end manufacturers. That's where my money would be going.

I use Pagid, very good too. A bonus that the top hats stay tidier, better rust protection.

Cheers chaps,
I've always had the car serviced at the nearest main stealer for warranty purposes etc, however as this is the first time I've changed either the discs or pads (got 99000 miles out of all of them, I don't like the brakes!!!) I find the prices quoted just daft! Looks like the local indy will be doing it! Ta!

I'd go for Brembo rather than Pagid as Pagid tend to squeak. (Due to pads not discs).

Parts are IRO £250 So ~£430 still seems high. (Can't get it precise as I don't have exact details)

Should take about an hour with a ramp

£820 is extortion, but we don't call them stealers for nothing.

You don't need to have it maintained at a main dealer to keep the warranty. (Just sayin.....)

pagid are oem spec brakes and pads.

the price is a bit higher, have a search for vag specialists near where you live and give them a ring for prices as well. I would get the brake fluid changed at the same time as well.

Given that the indie has offered you a choice of Pagid or Brembo, it sounds like he's going to be sourcing the parts from EuroCarPArts as they stock both of those brands alongside Eicher as well for brakes at least.

I've used their parts on various cars including a 996, S6, 3 series, Alfa, Aygo and my current A8. Not a problem with any of the parts. As other's have said though, labour seems to be a bit high. Brakes aren't anything special so maybe try a backstreet garage based on local recommendations.

The Audi fixed prices for these jobs are £674 on their website.
Might want to point that out to them.

The EPB needs to be done correctly on the rears otherwise you can break it and that is replacement calipers, your generic back street garage may not have the kit.

I'm considering the same move away from OEM for front discs and pads on my S4 B7. Appreciate any suggestions on brands and typical prices - seems dealer wants around £500 for the job...

Very fair I'd say.

Edit: if they haven't already mentioned it probably a good opportunity to flush/replace brake fluid at the same time. Should be another £30-50 depending on where you go.

You absolutely don't (even services can be done elsewhere and keep warranty, so long as they're done EXACTLY the manufacturer spec'), BUT a main dealer history definitely helps in the case of issues outside of warranty, where you're relying on goodwill etc

£800 for pads/disks on an A4 is mental though.

If you're particularly fussed, get the services done at the main stealer (but as others have said, find a marque specific indie and you're laughing), but don't get the brakes done there.

I used to run an Audi or two, but by way of comparison, my current Lexus ISF needed front discs and pads. Main dealer quoted my effectively £1000 for the lot. Local tyre monkeys brought that down to around £400, but I got Brembo discs and pads from Amazon and ECP and fitted them myself for £280.

Now I know that not everyone has the time / skills / inclination to do brake changes themselves, but the point is the variation in costs paid. If you got to the main dealer for these kind of jobs you're paying for their shiny suits and coffee machines. Don't do it!!
(and my next car will probably be an Audi, so I'm not anti Audi per-se).

I use a mobile mechanic, last time I had front discs and pads all around changed for about £100 labour. I provided the parts myself from either ECP or Carparts4less.

Bargain. ECP are usually pretty good. Had problems with the wrong pads when I was changing the fronts on my 996 once. Had to leave the car in bits on my drive whilst I drove over to them. Luckily they had the right ones in and didn't charge me any extra as the right ones were more expensive.

Go for Brembo, seem to remember some lesser brand buying up the Pagid name, but I could be wrong. You can get some good deals on Brembos on ebay, just be careful that they are genuine, I got those for my S8 and my local mechanic charged me £60 to fit them..on the other hand front discs for my RS6 seem to be only available from Audi/TPS and were a bit pricey!!
