We had the emissions update a few months back, and yesterday, the day after its advisory free MOT at the main dealer the yellow EML comes on with no running issues. We went to the cinema for three hours, came out and it was fine, the light was out. I have a code reader and it linked me to the egr valve. I cleared the code and all was well. Tonight after filling up it came on again, no running issues. I cleared the same fault and went out for a spirited 12 mile highway drive to see if it would reappear, nothing. It is still running fine. It's fairly unrefined anyway being the 1.2 tdi.

My question is has anyone had this before following an MOT after the emissions update? It just all seems a bit of a coincidence. New EGR valve plus fitting is £250+ at VW, and whilst I'm happy to accept that it's a 5 year old car now, it is a bit odd. Thanks.

I cant answer the emissions related bit but most egr valve issues can be resolved with taking it off and giving it a good clean.
You have to be handy with the spanners though, some can be in awkward locations.
It is possible for them to fail, especially if they are electrically driven as they coke up and stick causing the motor to fail.

I wasn't aware that the 1.2 was affected by the emissions furore. I thought it was only the 1.6 and 2.0 that required an update.

On these engines there have been reports of DPF and EGR issues after the update.

In your case it does seem a little too quick after the update but it is a bit of coincidence.

It was the EGR. VW are charging us 1 hour labour and footing the rest of the (large) bill no quibbles. Can't really complain about that. Plus they saw it the same day I spoke to them.

Am in the same situation.

Girlfriends car - light has started coming on after having emission software altered.

I have driven it a couple of time and the light has gone off

had it cleared off a couple of time

£700 plus from local garage to have it swapped (back of the engine bay under the turbo - quite a bit of work)

Looking into EGR deleting software - need to ring round and see what a few garages / tuners say about this

Ours is still with VW, should get it back shortly. Bill is into the thousands unfortunately, but fortunately most of it is covered, despite the cars age.

EGR cooler, yes they are covering 90% as the engine was replaced under warranty a couple of years back.

Hi, I've just had the EGR replaced on my 1.2 polo by VW free of charge, search VW TRUST BUILDING MEASURE for details then phone VW UK for a case number.
