My diesel Octavia vRS lease ends in 12 months so I am starting to research my next car. I don't think I need such a large car so fancy a GTi but I do 20000 miles a year, about half business and a lot of driving to cycle races. So, what kind of economy can you get on a 70 mph motorway run?

Currently averaging about 37mpg a tank, but a fair amount of my driving involves 3rd or 4th gear overtakes using all of the power, and nailing it out of the twisty bits. My commute is 17mi so the engine is only just warmed up then too. If you are doing a genuine 70mph on a longer run then you can get 40mpg. Creep above that and you'll be into high 30s.

I did 120mi to Inverness the other day. I was at 22mpg at one point 10mi in on the twisty uphill A822 with some spirited driving, but it got up to 40mpg by the time I'd sat at 60 up the A9 for a while.

I did manage the official mpg once - 47mpg when driving home at 55mph on the spacesaver.

My average is around 30 but the car spends most of its time in the city, notice a huge difference on a run into the low 40's. We went from Edinburgh to Glasgow this week and the remaining miles on the display was higher when we got back!

Ours is doing a tank average of 30mpg (measured, although the dash isn't far off accurate) with mixed local use and the odd motorway run. I don't tend to drive with economy in mind, and this is a 100% improvement on the 16mpg average in my last car lol

I've not yet fiddled with the eco setting but usually allow stop-start to do its thing once the car is properly warmed up
