Golf V5 tensioner

I gather the post 2002 cars had updated tensioners, I'm looking at buying a 53 plate with 150k. I also gather replacing the chain is a BIG investment however is replacing chain only a realistic idea as a kind of compromise?
A mate of mine loves his V5 and wouldn't part with it although I hear mixed views in general.
Any thoughts would be gladly received
