Golf R satnav query
Discussion
Some advice please, I am starting to look for a 2nd hand R, the VW salesman suggested that if the car didn't have satnav it could be retrofitted for £750 or a mod that allows the screen to link to your phone for £200.
My question: Does the £750 option effectively give OEM satnav, and does anybody have experience of the phone option?
Thanks

I paid 500 and other than having to press media button it looks like it came from the factory.

The £200 upgrade sounds like the £150 Apple carplay/ Android Auto update that SEAT offer but you already need the MIB2 system to do that upgrade. My question: Does the £750 option effectively give OEM satnav, and does anybody have experience of the phone option?

Be interesting to see what the £750 retrofit is as SEAT are adamant you cant retrofit MIB2 to a MIB1 car even though I have seen it done.

The 750 quid retrofit is the kenwood system as mentioned above. MIB2 can be retrofitted but not officially it needs some Hackery to work I believe so only unofficial channels will do itBe interesting to see what the £750 retrofit is as SEAT are adamant you cant retrofit MIB2 to a MIB1 car even though I have seen it done.
I have a new GTD estate with Sat Nav. A more useless system is hard to find. It can't find postcodes and misses the most basic place names, Thankfully the Car Net system allows Auto Android and Google maps - fantastic system and so accurate. The Car Net system can be retrospectively fitted and allows access to Car Play etc
Had pro nav and standard nav in Rs and hated for reasons quoted and it leaves you to the last minute at junctions and no where near as good in the BMW nav in my other car
Was going to retrofit the Kenwood on my rental R but went of the Car Play and have to admit this via the phone trounces it

car play with Apple is 10 times worse than the factory nav - it limits you to the Apple apps, so you can't use Waze or Google Maps, so completely pointless. Haven't tried my wife's Samsung to see if the Android version is less restrictive/crap.
I have the big screen nav and dynaudio tech pack in our Golf and I like it purely for the better media interface - the nav is fine for our use and with the hotspot set up you can have streetview etc which is mildly amusing, if you like that sort of thing.
