New Golf mk7 gtd owner couple questions
Discussion
I've just purchased a golf hrs mk7 65 reg, from main dealers very nice car well speccd too pan roof, discover pro, heated seats and all the rest..
In the handbook it mentions a mdi cable? What's this?
That should come With the car?
Can anyone confirm this I tried too use my lead for iPhone in the USB port too charge the phone but it doesn't work at all with my iPhone 6 or daughters 6+
But my Mrs iPhone 7 charges this way fine any ideas?
Also I was trying too set up the app connect switch on personal hotspot for the car too connect too but the discover pro doesn't find it and therefore cannot continue what am I doing wrong?

I bought a self coiling USB cable from a Chinese seller which does micro USB and Lightning in one (allegedly certified, but not convinced!) and it seems to work perfectly, as does my Lidl bought Lightning cable. Have used both in the Discover Pro USB slot with iphone 6 and 7 Plus and the phones play music via Aux input, or bluetooth stream.
For app connect to work you will probably need to take 'ownership' of the car by registering for car-net on the VW website, which will then generate a registration code for you to enter into the nav setup (under car, scroll right to the right, setup) - be warned it times out when the car is 3 years old and extending it costs.

Be warned that app connect for Apple is so shockingly bad (you only get the limited Apple-only apps it lets you have, so no Waze/Google Maps etc) that I wouldn't accept the connection to app connect when you plug the phone into the USB port (which you must for app connect to work). If you do accidentally you need to go back into the settings menu mentioned above and factory reset the networking option (can't remember the exact description, but it's slightly 'odd') otherwise plugging it in to charge only won't work and you're stuck with app connect until you can reset it (can't be done from the phone) - if the unit hasn't been factory reset before you picked it up then I'd do all the settings to clear out old phone pairings, nav destinations etc.
The only real benefit of car-net to me is the online services for transferring POIs via the web site and for getting fuel prices/weather app etc, or setting up the car as a wi-fi hotspot if you've got multiple phones in the car with differing data allowances.
ETA - forgot to say as well that once you've set up your phone to the car for data, using the personal hotspot option, it will only reconnect to the nav if you toggle personal hotspot off and back on again on the handset EVERY time. Pain in the behind! If somebody knows different, I'm all ears!

Many thanks for the helpful reply, I have registered fine and had my activation code but under the settings and regestration this box is greyed out.
Also the same whenever I try too setup a personal hotspot doesn't allow me to continue past a certain screen can't remember which now could all this be down too the fact I am using an apple USB cable not the correct one mentioned above?

You need to create the network connection between phone and nav before you can enter the registration code. AFAIK you can only do that via the wireless connection with an iphone, so until you're in the personal hotspot menu on your phone with the blue bar flashing at the top to say there's a device connected (and the wifi symbol on the nav is just showing signal strength without a 0 next to it) it isn't going to register.
Page 18 of the nav manual (configuring WLAN client) describes the setup from the nav - you need to switch personal hotspot on on the iphone and then enter the pairing code when you search on the nav for the connection. Then it's as I posted before - to create the connection in future just toggle the hotspot off and on from the phone once the nav unit is powered up

Ok seems to be a problem somewhere as I defiantly have personal hotspot on but the car can't find it and vice Versa dealer trip I think..
Regarding the mdi cable I don't think my car is capable of accepting it I thought the cable
Connects to the USB port near gearstick as that's the only Port I have in mine but seems other cars have the mdi connection
