Hi,

Well it all happened last Friday when the temperature gauge shot straight to max and the dash warning said turn the engine of immediately, coolant level low. The car is now in the garage and they have confirmed that the head gasket is ok and there are no fault codes so they will investigate the water pump tomorrow as they have to remove the front bumper to inspect.

To be fair the car has been making a plastic kind of ticking noise on cold start up and thought the water pump may need attention at some point.

The question here is what should i expect to pay for a water pump replacement at an independent garage?

Could it be another fault as there are no obvious leaks?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mat

What year S4?

Audi changed the pump from plastic to aluminium after a series of failures on 2010 cars. Not sure if there was an actual recall.

DrG will probably know about costs smile

The car is a September 2010 car so I believe it may be the plastic early water pump. It's been making a plastic ticking noise on an off for a few months.

Does anyone know if Audi are likely to pay anything towards it or is this a ware and tare item?

The car has 70k on it.

It's a wear and tear item.

On a Golf/A3 etc it's around £350 including cambelt.
I believe your is chain driven so I'm not sure on the labour, I would estimate no more than 6 hours looking online.

Parts are here - Basically convert 1:1 $ to £ , anything less than that is a bonus

Photo shamelessly stolen from Audi-Sport, but:

This shows the early, plastic water pump (black front) that has been known to fail. Later ones are all aluminium (silver/grey in colour where that one is black).

Thanks Dr G I will ask the garage to confirm which pump is on the car as I'm out of the country at the moment.

The garage says there appears to be no leak and the water appesrs to not be pumping round to the water is boiling up. They have ordered a new pump and thermostat to eliminate each possible cause in one hit.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted this week so I can get the MRC stage 2!

So after further investigation the garage has changed the thermostat and the water pump at a cost of £654 which appears to have sorted the problem. They could determine which part was at fault and they said the car had the later metal a pump already fitted. Either way I know both known to fail parts are sorted which is imperative for when the MRC stage 2 gets fitted to ensure reliability.

I thought £654 was pretty good for genuine parts and 6 hours labour to diagnose and fit.
