My Golf R is due to go back. To be honest it has been excellent but at my age I would prefer a bit more comfort. I like the look of the new A3 sport back and am trying to decide whether the 2.0 petrol is worth the extra over the 1.5. Does anyone have any experience of the 2.0? Before the Golf I drove an A1 1.4 tfsi and found it more than adequate.

Any advice gratefully received

Which 2.0 engine is it you are looking at? I've not tried the 1.5 yet but have had plenty of the 1.4 150ps engines and the 2.0 220ps ones, completely different characters and it depends on what you want out of it.

I've got a six month old A3 with the 1.4 petrol. It is a great engine with plenty of power and torque for everyday use (think 80's hot hatch performance).

It does have a weak spot below 1500 rpm where it's a bit dead but so long as you're in the right gear it isn't really a problem.

40mpg average with lots of urban driving and easily climbs into the high 40's on a-roads and motorways.

It looks like they've moved to a 1.5 now but with very similar output,

The extra torque of the 2ltr might be handy if you travel with a full car often but other than that there doesn't seem to be enough of a performance leap to make it worth going for.

Thank you for your reply.

I was thinking of the 190ps engine, probably in Sport trim

Thank you for your reply. It probably confirms what I was thinking. I will try to test drive both but am thinking the 1.5 will be enough and may even be more fun

I'm not sure that the 1.5 is more fun but it's £1,800 cheaper, has a diesel-like power delivery and can easily get 40mpg+.

My thinking when I bought the 1.4 was that the A3 isn't a car you go driving down a B road for fun so you might as well get a comfort spec with the sports suspension delete, auto box and smaller engine.

The Sport trim is worth having for the sport seats, which have more adjustment than the standard ones. Lumbar support is worth having but that's extra.

Thank you.
How do you like the automatic gearbox?

I've not driven the 2.0 190 engine so can't really comment on that specifically.

I had the 1.8 180ps engine in a mk3 Leon and then the 1.4 150 engine in another leon straight after and preferred the 1.4 as it turned in better and gave much better fuel economy for very little noticeable power deficiency.

As for the DSG/Manual debate I will always choose DSG over manual these days, I find it a chore when I have to drive a manual nowadays but I do get my manual changes in on two wheels and tend not to go out for spirited drives in the car as much any more.
