noticed my A6 Avant has the equivalent of a small compost heap each side near the scuttle / struts.
Anyone removed the cover to get better access ?

There are some places where it's hooked under the bump stops for the bonnet, but in general it doesn't want to come out.
No obvious screws or bolts holding it in place.
Do the wiper arms need to come off and then maybe some other facing plates between the wipers and the motor / linkage assembly.

Is this a big job and better to persevere hooking out the cr*p bit by bit, or can it be removed fairly easily.

Do you mean the plastic cover over the brake master cylinder?

The rubber trim on the front pulls off and it just slides out

No the scuttle panel betw the windscreen and the engine bay. The wiper spindles go through it and it sits under the bonnet when the bonnet is closed.

I would have thought it would be welded in.

All sorted.
Good hints here, https://www.audiworld.com/how-tos/a/audi-a6-c6-how...
altho it doesn't match for the revision of car.

On my 2011 A6 C6, lift up the weather strip at the front of the scuttle as in the link above.

But then no other tools needed. The front edge of the scuttle lifts up and the the top part of the scuttle cover fits into a groove just separates.

n.b. this isn't the upper scuttle cover by the wiper spindles, just the large cover.
