Hi Folks,

I am shortly changing my car and looking at an Audi A8 but really I want the 4.2 TDI. The problem is, I can only get into something with about 150k on the clock but with a full service history.

I don't mind high mileage as long as it has been taken care of, but I guess what I want to know is if 150k is probably at the stage where I might start encountering problems - are the engines still good at these sorts of miles and do they keep going?

Any views would be a big help smile

Thanks,

Andy

I think is case of getting it properly inspected plus understanding what maintenance / repairs have been carried out. My understanding is the drivetrain is fundamentally strong though other bits will fail simply due to age and wear & tear. For eg my D4 has required following work between 83-97k (currently on 98k), most of it under extended warranty - new water pump, new thermostat, new N/S suspension strut and air spring, O/S drop link, g/box oil cooler coolant valve. At 83k miles I also had g/box oil plus final drive & diff oils changed for peace of mind. If car has been looked after then you're good to go, but if significant work needed can be very expensive. Let us know how you go on smile

Very expensive engine and thin on the ground for a secondhand replacement but a stonking car. Just trading my 2012 4.2TDI in for a 66 plate. The extended warranty at high mileage is prohibitively expensive and everything on this car costs a fortune to replace. I would be very nervous about a high mileage one, it could easily get ruinously expensive.
