I've been browsing autotrader and PH classifieds at a few Audi S4 Avants, I can't really justify the extra thousands on a B8 with the V6 engine.
Is the V8 any good? The ones that have come up, all have 100k or more miles on them, so I would assume that the timing chain and tensioner would have been sorted?
At this kind of mileage, are they worth a go? It's 6 or 7k, Vs 14k and upwards on the B8
Currently have a diesel 3 series and looking to go back to a petrol, as only do around 30 - 40 miles a day

I wouldn't assume anything with regards to timing chains, unless its got a receipt for it being done at an Audi specialist or main dealer it most likely hasn't, seeing as its an engine out job, the timing chain is at the back of the engine and completely inaccessible in situ.
The main thing on these is its infinitely preferable that they've had oil changes yearly or every 10k rather than the variable servicing every 2 years or 18k which most will have had. If its been a motorway car with regular oil changes it should still have plenty of life in at 100k. Be aware the manuals are stupidly short geared for motorway work, the autos which are a 6 spd ZF are much better.

Thanks. I think the ones that have popped up in my search are actually B6 ones, it's another 4k for the face lift and then another 4k on top if you want the Supercharged one.The main thing on these is its infinitely preferable that they've had oil changes yearly or every 10k rather than the variable servicing every 2 years or 18k which most will have had. This is about my price range

Thanks for the link, I've been browsing as many threads as I can on here. One of my concerns is spending 6k on a car that is 13 or more years old, with over 100k on it.My current 3 series is at 111k and its cost me a fair bit in maintenance over the 3 years I've owned it and it's getting frustrating
Ok, so I've started to look at the newer S4's, as I think spending a bit more money might be worth it.
I've made some enquiries about this one http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
It doesn't have Nav or the adjustable dampers, are these things I'll regret not having? I have Nav in my 3 series and it's pretty poor, but the dashboard looks crap without the hump, so I made sure to get it (I use Google maps to navigate)
There is another one which is also advertised on here, but it's another 2k on top, but has the other options and some more, however it's a private sale.

I also looked at that red S4. Worth noting it also doesn't have heated seats, or indeed the super-sport seats that others may do. It's surprising that some people ordered a prestige car seemingly without ticking any options boxes at all. But then I suppose everyone has their own priorities/budget.

I contacted them and it pretty much has nothing! The black one sold, which is a pain as I'd been given clearance from the Mrs to go for it!

Could have been a lease/company car from back in the day?Almost all of the super cheap leased S4/S5's hitting the roads in 2017 will be 'strippers'.
