Hi,

Sorry if thread title is mis leading, I tried to word it correctly.

I have a mk6 golf gti edition 35, which has the EA113 engine with the KO4 turbo, the MK5 golf uses a version of this engine and everyone talks about cam follower wear especially in mapped cars etc and how it needs to be changed.

Do I need to worry about doing mine? Surely by 2013 VW would've sorted this problem out or used a upgraded unit in my version of this engine?

Any hints to them using a stronger unit,

Thanks!

As far as i know ed35s have cam followers as well. Normal mk6 gtis don't. I'm a mk5 gti owner and i am having my cam follower replaced this week. Stock engines don't wear through the followers anywhere near as quick as modified ones - my research for mine suggests that they should last 80k to 100k on a stock engine but only 5k to 20k on a modded one. I would personally get it done - not an expensive job - for piece if mind as i don't think they ever strengthened it. I know they revised the cam itself at some point during the mk5 era but think that was it.

All EA113 engines use the tappet style cam follower, so yes, that includes the ED35, and also the MK6 R, Scirocco R and 8P S3.

EA888 engines changed to a roller follower. I have converted my Edition 30 to run the EA888 follower.

Bump,

So a 2013 edition 35 wouldn't have a revised part at all? I'm still going to have to change it at some point?

Thanks,

TFSI tuning comes with a hefty tax! I remember the tuning taxes on my old R32s being substantial, but this is something else.

Standard pump, standard tune then yep, just stick with the standard setup.

The premature wear problem with the flat tappets is only apparent with aftermarket pumps, which use considerably stiffer springs. It's a loading the original part was not designed for and some people chew through a tappet in < 3000 miles, but 10K miles is a good stretch.

Very good read, and very knowledgeable as always SVR6! Thanks!

Just one more thing.... ( hehe )

If I stick to a stage 1 revo on standard pump, and just check the follower every 10K (Car is currently on 38K)

Will I likely catch the wear before it wears bad enough to cause me damage?

Revo 1 is a great tune and doesn't cause any problems with the pump generally. It does exert more force on the tappet from the increased pressure demands of the tune, but nothing like that of an uprated pump.

My advice is a really good oil, the best you can afford, and check the follower every second oil change. Be careful with the 3 bolts that fix the pump to the chain cover. Again, the pump was not designed to be removed/refitted frequently and clumsy people are stripping the threads out of the cover, which is helicoils or a new cover as the fix!

That's why I opted for the roller conversion because it's fit and forget.

It's not that much really. Given the cost of the damage if your cam follower fails....

They say if you are stage 2+ (so with upgraded fuel pump) and use the car in anger then you need to change it every 8-10k (when you do the oil).

In reality you can get many services from a cam follower before you need to replace it but it's a nice fit and forget option.

£400 + shipping is a chunk of wedge but that's about the cost of 10 cam followers , and about 1/3rd the cost of the repair if the cam follower has failed smile

As long as injectors are healthy they are very reliable.

I also have seen a car that was fitted with an early gen LOBA and the cam follower was unmarked after 70k with nanodrive oil.
It was a BWA lump I believe.

My GTI had blocked the pickup pipe so obviously had a poor service regime before hand but the follower was in good nick for 80 odd k.

thanks all, appreciate all of your comments!

I already use top quality with short interval servicing, so I think the day before I go revo stage 1 I will change the cam follower as a matter of course, then check it once a year doing service/mot time as the car only does around 6-7k a year.

Much appreciated and another thing to stop the headaches hehe

Ideally the place uploading your Revo map can monitor the fuel rail pressure. The standard pumps on the KO4 engines have a habit of not being able to keep up with the flow demand in the midrange, so keep some budget aside for an uprated pump.

You do realise once you map it, you're no longer in the periphery of the Rabbit hole, you've well and truly jumped in!

I have plenty of recommendations for you if you decide to make you ED35 a proper B road blaster smile

Ahh, knowledge is power, I've come from a mk4 1.8T and I've done loads of reading but you can never know enough.

I will budget for a pump I think, the Revo dealer local to me is excellent, they transfered the 1.8t into a crazy beast!

Yeah I've been putting off mapping it, because once you're in, you're in hehe

I would be open to any suggestions chap, I'm always eager, especially from someone as knowledgeable as yourself! smile

Music to my ears biggrin

Is the problem exaderated online due to poor fuel quality in America? Or something else?
