Anyone else getting really poor mileage out of their new rubber? Happens to be my wifes Tiguan (new model), AWD. Happens to be the fronts strangely but i suppose it is a FWD biased car and only uses the rears when traction lost. 13k miles and the tread is down(evenly) to the wear bars. The rears are in great condition. Contisportcontact 5 ContiSeal variants on 20" alloys to make it even more painful. Given the mileage she does it looks like a new set every 10 months.

I've heard of X5s getting sub 10k and Q7s the same but it's a tiguan, driven sedately and only has 150hp. Even Cayenne Turbos doing 18-20k

My 2013 Leon came new with 18" Conti Sport Contact 5's, the original fronts got around 23-24k out of them and I could have probably stretched it a little further, I was relatively happy with that so opted for another pair of the same - I got about 10k out of the next set, with very slight uneven wear. Swapped them for some Michelin Pilot Sports which are still on the car at 57k and getting to a point where I am thinking of changing again.

The rears are still the original Continentals.

I did take the issue up with Continental who had the tyres sent to them for inspection, they came back with a lot of blurb I didn't understand, I didn't get anywhere with it - they obviously blamed the tracking of the vehicle. - If yours are worn evenly then it may be worth contacting them to have them inspected - my second set probably went on around October 2015 if that coincides with anything on your car (manufacture date?) - could have been a bad batch made around that time.

i'm not looking to get anything FOC, it just doesn't seem right to me. The tracking could very well be out. I'll try calling Continental. The VW dealers are bloody useless. Cheers

edited to add. Contacted Conti who said they'd inspect them. I fully expect a 'all normal' response-thanks for the tip

Is the pressure correct for the load and the conditions?

I'm sure I've seen a comment on a Tig II forum from someone who said he only got 6K from a set.

I'd have to say, no idea but the car does have pressure warning gadget and it's the original tyres from new. I have a good independent garage nearby so i'll pop in and see what they think

Type the tyres name into google and you'll see the reviews stating that these tyres wear ridiculously quick ... I don't know how a chap in this thread got 25k out of them!

I'm on 2.5k and they're starting to look worn banghead Granted it's a high powered FWD car but it gets driven relatively sedately and if I do press on it's never from standing starts etc

cheers for that-on looking it would appear the tyres simply suck for longevity. To be avoided in future. The pain is exacerbated by the fact the tyre is on a 20" wheel. £221 is the cheapest i can find. The only consolation being the rears are in good shape.

I had these Contis on SLK55, fronts looked shredded after 18K even though they still had reasonable thread. I would expect them to last much longer on a front in RWD car. Rears were replaced at 16K but that's expected.

He said 25K first set, then 10K for second set. Perhaps the first ones weren't ContiSeal and maybe that makes a difference?

Ahh I didn't see the 'Seal' part ... my comment was relating to the sport contact 5p's on mine although looking online nearly all continental's struggle with longevity curse

They're a good tyre tbf but there are now tyres which perform as good, cost similar and last a lot longer! Michelin and Goodyear being ones I've had first hand experience with.

Contis do seem to wear quickly, and not particularly evenly, in larger sizes.

Have found Michelin offer excellent wear, but at a fairly stiff cost.

TPMS won't tell you whether all 4 tyres are dropping pressure over time - it only shows up a drop in 1 compared to the rest. Buy a digital pressure gauge from Halfords et al for about £20 and take the randomness out of tyre pressure setting.

Can you swap to a normal (no sealant) tyre next time they wear out?

The rears are fine so not sure if you can do that (mismatched tyres)

How good are the rears? It's probably unavoidable in the cut & thrust of London stop-start traffic but a big difference implies an element of "press-on" driving.

On the mk1 Tiguan people talk in terms of 30-40K from the tyres - at 10K on my wife's 4Motion DSG with 17" Dunlop's they look like new front and rear - so you'd think there'd be uproar on the 20" Conti's wear-rate but a browse through the Tiguan forums didn't reveal any complaints.

Apart from the comment I already mentioned, someone else noted his are half-worn at 8500 miles - depending on what he means by half-worn, that could easily be similar to what you've seen. The only other comment I saw was someone said his did 18K and he was happy with that.

She did get 40k on all 4 tyres on the MK1 Tiguan. The car isn't driven hard. She pootlles around. I don't drive it much, maybe 20 miles a week. I noticed crabbing a lot but otherwise can't understand the disparity with wear. Front wheel drive bias, engine over the front axle. The tyres are soft, low profile. Will just have to swallow it and avoid conti's in future if possible. There are a few interesting cars coming out next year. Might move to x3, q5, possible electric q6. I normally fit winters but the silly 20 inch wheels make that pointless and I can't be bothered with the storage and hassle of buying a full set of winter wheels and tyres in 18s

It might be worth a mention to VW on that basis? I guess if no-one ever complains they won't know.

Going back a bit Audi were giving people tyres for Q7's due to excess wear and a friend of a friend has an RS4 and he was repeatedly given tyres for that.

Which model have you got? I thought you had an SEL and I had it my head that came with 20" wheels, but I just looked it up and it's 19's - have VW dropped the size?

It's the R-Line. I know you had the Mk1. Big step up in refinement, as one would expect but to be honest I'm not impressed with the fuel economy. No doubt it's an emissions diesel gate thing. Last long trip which covered mostly motorway cruising over 500 miles it averaged 36 mpg. Hardly great and they made the fuel tank smaller to accommodate the 11L AdBlue.

VW have been pretty crap too. They suggested i talk to a retailer(dealer), two were called twice and no one bothered to call back. I explained i wasn't expecting anything for free, just wanted the car looked at to see if the set up was correct. VW UK then followed up to ask how i got on. When told both dealers didn't call back they said 'oh, sorry to hear that'. The end. Brilliant. I'd hate to have a serious issue.
