I've just bought a 2001 TT fitted with 18" Ronal wheels from a V6 I believe, they have 235/35 tyres at present that need changed but I'm not sure why this size has been chosen as I don't think its correct for the car or the wheel, any advise on size and recommendation on tyre for summer use?

Correct size will be either 225/40x18 or 235/40x18.

It will probably tell you on the tyre pressure sticker inside the fuel flap.

By the way Ronal is the wheel manufacturer and supplies multiple styles of wheels to VAG.

Don't know about the V6 wheels but on the 9 spoke rs tts your car is supposed to be fitted with they are 18 x 8 et35 and wear 225/40s.

A couple of years back Falken tyres were highly regarded, 452 gave way to 453, I found them a pretty good mid range option.

Definitely 225/40/18 as I had a TT for years. Quite a popular size so there will be plenty of choice out there.
