2011 Golf GTI.

Short version - Is it just a dying battery, nothing else?

Longer version.......

Couple of weeks ago after lying idle for a couple of days the car was sluggish to start most of the day, starter barely turning the engine over to fire in one case.
Seemed to settle down back in daily use. Occasionally a bit sluggish but always enough to fire up.

Then last night - bit sluggish starting up leaving work but later on leaving Holyrood park, no chance the starter was turning, just a load of clicking relays but it fired up easy with a jump.

Once started everything is running perfectly mechanically and electrically hence my basic logic saying "Strong alternator, dying battery".

It started up this morning perfectly ranting

It's probably still the original battery so will have seen better days. I would get it changed before the colder weather comes in.

My Son bought a 2011 Golf tsi and had exactly the same thing. After a few days of non use it would just do the relay chatter, I would charge it and it would be fine again, it would also start easily with a jump or push, one time he went out and it refused to start 5 minutes after stopping.

Bought a new (higher powered) battery and it has been fine since, car was low mileage and had been standing for several months before he bought it and I suspect the battery (and the perished rear tyres) were original.
