My 175k mile Audi A4 (B6) needs a cambelt.

My local garage have quoted me £570 inc for the job including service.

The car cant be worth that now. What should i do? Is the belt easy to replace, but i guess that it could need water pump, tensioners etc.

What would the consensus be - should i get it done?

You'll regret it if it snaps.

When was it last done? How much longer do you intend keeping the car? All factors to consider....
Can you DIY it? There are loads of guides on line, whilst it takes a while it isn't particularly difficult and will save a fortune on garage labour.

Last done at circa 102k miles. The car owes me nothing and to be honest, I dont want to buy a new car.
I will see if i can manage this myself. Are there tensioners etc to change at the same time?

I will change the water pump to be safe .

RAY- might be worth a look on Briscoda . There's unit 18 ( bit far in Milton Keynes, but they are keen priced and VAG specialists) or a poster called Tech1e ,( another VAG Mastertech) who runs a place in Worcs/Gloucester , a bit nearer.

I was going to recommend a very reasonable audi specialist who did the cambelt on my last A3, but they're in the Midlands so a bit far for you.

If it snapped you could probably buy a replacement car for £500. But, the chances of you having to spend the same money again getting the car maintenance up to date are high. So if you like the car get the work done.

Failing that, just take the chance and not bother. The law of SOD will ensure it doesn't break anyway. This only happens when you like the car and can't really afford the repair bill ; )

Audi Swindon have just quoted me £550 for each car with waterpump. This will use genuine Audi parts and come with two years warranty on the parts and a year on the labour.

Doesn't sound bad and I get a loan car - last time I had a A6 all road 3.0 tdi - lovely.

I will stagger my cars and get this done.
