Hey all,

I just picked up a 2005 mark 5 r32. Its DSG with 5 doors and all stock. Lovely beast but when driving over bumpish roads at a slow speed I notice a vibrating noise when putting my foot down. Pretty sure its not the exhaust because when I rev it standing still I don't get a noise. It almost sounds like a thin bit of metal is humming.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the hear shield above the cats is loose.

So I checked the heat shield etc everything on the underside of the car is tip top. I only get the noise when moving. So I'm baffled. Any ideas.

Stone in brake perhaps?

Could be. I experienced a stone stuck in the rear brakes and it made quite a noise.

Need a video. R32s make a ton of different noises.

Could it be a fuel line rattle perhaps?

Yup.....especially with a turbo attached!

The MK5 is actually a well sorted car. Bung some Ohlins Coilovers on it, SuperPro control arm bushes and ball joints, dial in -1.5 degrees negative camber, add a degree of caster and they handle very, very well indeed. I just wish they were as fast as the exhaust note implies.

I'll have a listen to the clip later when at home with the speakers cranked up!

Well, Steven Spielberg certainly isn't going to hire you as a camera man biglaugh But that noise I can hear sounds like the rear brake discs to me.
I can't hear any exhaust / cat converter shield resonance. Could be the aforementioned chunk of gravel trapped between the disc and splash shield, or a dragging caliper + slightly warped disc(s). The rear calipers on the MK5 are prone to seizing up and causing brake drag.

What I like to do with hard to trace noises is get the car off the ground and whack the tyres hard with a big ol' lump hammer. Anything loose will make itself very apparent straight away. The trouble with poking and levering on things is it doesn't replicate the tyres touching the ground.

You certainly know your stuff because before I read your comment here I went to a local garage who has taken care of a few of my German cars and he said it was the rear brake rubbing against the dust guard. When we looked we notice a small hair line scratch around the guard that the edge of the disc was making. Small push on the guard and I have not heard it since. Here's hoping!

Saga continues. I don't think it is the issue that I said. Mainly because I had the car up and spun the wheels. No noise. Then when I changed from drive to reverse I could hear the tin tap noise and then when driving it would get louder. But it only happens when changing gear barely never. So i'm stumped!

Any ideas?

What condition are your tyres and tracking in?

"Sawtooth" sound is a well-known issue on Golf Mk5 platform cars, whereby rubbish tyres cause this noise. I had this on my old R32 when I first picked-it up. Went as soon as I put 4 new tyres on it and had the alignment sorted.

Just for sts and giggles, try pulling the Haldex fuse and try again.

If not rear axle related, I'm running out of ideas. I had a similar noise on my own R32 after driving through an almighty puddle, then the ABS/ESP/TC lights went beserk and lots of grinding/scraping noises from the rear end. Once dry the noise went. Do you have any ABS fault codes? I still think it's rear brake related, or worn bearings causing hub movement, which then causes the brakes to drag.

Tyres seems to be fine and they are all brands. Rears probably have about 2k miles left. A garage I recently took it too reckon it is a stone in the brakes but i'm not so sure.

You might be stop on with the wheel bearing. I'll have to take the wheels and brakes of for a good look though.
