My S4 Quattro V8 is proving to be expensive to run in both petrol and oil now my annual mileage has increased. I'm now thinking of changing it for an RS 3 Quattro. Can I expect a significantly lower consumption in both oil and petrol ? I think probably that I can, but it'd be nice to hear the opinions of others.

Similarly, what about the performance figures between the two cars ? Would an RS3 live in the same room as a V8 S4 in that respect ?

The RS3 will blow your S4 away...it’s 400 PS
Also, RS3 is made by Audi Sport formally Audi Quattro GMBH
Audi S4 is made by Audi on the standard A4 production line

Buy the RS3 however no it will not be substantially cheaper to run, maybe slightly but you wont see much of a difference.

RS cars are rather more expensive to maintain, whether through main dealer or indies, so be aware. I've owned a few (in an RS6PE now) so feel reasonably qualified to give an opinion and I wouldn't want you to think you'd be entering some exclusive club. These days they are all very good, quick and capable, some better than others, but ultimately they are a mixed bag.

Before you jump have a look at a few other marques, just my 2p but if it's driving fun you're after (and it ain't for me these days) then I think there are better options.

I have to ask, why do you keep pissing on people’s chips, do you have a really fat wife or something?

Well I have been lucky enough to own many Porsches, from seventies 2.2s to GT3, and I bloody love my C7 RS6 - best daily driver I have ever had.

If you take depreciation into account I think the answer would be no. Day to day running costs are probably similar but you are front loading the cost buying a newer car.

I also have a b7 s4 and seriously looked at the rs4 of the same generation and for me the s4 is significantly cheaper to run in comparison over the 100k miles I have put on it.

I am also considering an Alfa Romeo Giulia V6. This Alfa is faster than my DB9 Volante and just a tad slower than my Bentley Continental GTC. I also have an Alfa Romeo 156 GTA in my stable, so am not short of fast cars. My main reason for considering an S3, or indeed any fast car, is that I need to overtake quickly and safely, since I cannot abide slow drivers pootling along in front of me.

My RS3 has averaged 26mpg over 36k miles so should be better than a V8 imho. Will be way quicker than a V8 S4 too.

Have you thought about a slightly newer S4 with the V6?
I wouldn't buy an RS3 thinking you'll get lower petrol consumption smile the noise alone will make you hit that pedal....a lot

No it's not, the RS3 (and the TTRS) are made/built on the same production lines all the other A3's and TT's, the cars do not go to GMBH. The RS3 and RSTT are just trim lines with a bit of GMBH parts bin thrown at them.

RS products which are designed, developed and built by GMBH (now Audi-Sport) start at level 4.

What tosh ... different engines, different body panels, the only similarity to the non-RS models is the base chassis

YMMV, but I don’t know whether you’d get appreciably better fuel aconomy out of the V6 S4. I’ve got a B8.5 S4, and although it’s remapped, I don’t see much better than 26 mpg overall, and it’s not much worse now than when it was remapped.

It does make a nice noise though, not as nice as the RS3, but it’s still not bad!

I thought it was an RS3? You actually stated your main reason was running costs, though that's in the past now. I know what you mean about pootling drivers, whoppers on the internet have the same effect on me.

My supercharged S5 gives a tank average of 20-22mpg. Facelift 2013-on is a bit better

S3 or RS3, or AR Quatrofoglio, they are all under contention at present, hence my posting my original thread. As for running costs, even with the extravagance of 38 cylinders **spread between four cars, running my own business with many widely spread branches, I still have to bear my oil/petrol consumption in mind.
  • Shortly to become 50 cylinders, since I have just inherited my grandfathers 12 cylinder 1940
Lagonda Rapide drop head coupe.
