I am considering a Golf R DSG f5 door (also a Lexus ISF but they are soooo rare! that's another story biggrin, anyway I digress...)

Now I know that the infotainment/screen is a bit crappy/slow and that the MIB 2 update is a lot better and also includes Apple CarPlay (and Android equivalent). This has a benefit as don't need to care if it has satnav.

How do I identify which models have it? All I know is that the update came for 2016 models, however I don't want to find an early 2016 model that pre-dates the update (or even a 2015 model that didn't sell until 2016 on 2016 plates). When searching, is there a way to tell? Will sellers even know?

Another story, but Cheltenham Lexus have a 2011
IS-F just in, 44000 miles, blue and shiny, £26995. I drove it this afternoon and it’s very nice!

Closer to £20k and I would be very interested!

Still flipping between ISF and Golf R, both fit all my requirements. Golf cheaper to run but will depreciate more. ISF a lot more special etc. But the which do I go for is all another discussion!

Anyone know about Golf R infotainment?

I've got a March 2016 build GTD & it has MIB 2, I'm sure anything built from Feb 2016 onwards has it

Bit of haggling could get you close to £20k

That's one I've had my eye on but the issue is that it's in Newcastle and I am in Sussex.

I am reluctant to go all the way to find out it's not for me, or they're not interested in my PX (although I can purchase and sell my car privately if need be).
Also, if any issues after purchase, not simple to take it to them to fix issues!

That said, it does tick many boxes and if it were local to me I would have certainly gone to see it.

I may talk to them and see if they'll do a local Lexus inspection - who (Lexus that is) will then be happy to put warranty on it (obv extra cost to me etc.).

I am not in a hurry to buy, happy to wait until the right one comes along - same goes for the Golf R in that respect.

Thanks. Anyway to know (e.g. a site that I can look up number plate or suchlike) what build date it is? I suppose, if one that is "apparently" a 2016 model with the update I could simply call VW cust services to check?

That's probably the best way, they've got access to the detailed build info.

The MIB 2 looks different, it had a slightly larger screen as standard and a matte rather than glossy surround. Fairly easy to tell apart IMO smile

Old

New(er)

I’ve noticed the two different screen sizes, however even older ones have the larger screen and they defo pre-date 2016 when mib2 was released....

Think you’re referring to Discover Pro here which had the even larger 8” screen size, which yes looks the same whether MIB 1 or MIB 2. The latter came in build week 22 2015 if I remember right.

My pictures are of the standard Compsition Media/ Discover Navigation systems which most cars have fitted.

Hi

Can anyone confirm, given the links I put above, that this is correct? If so, makes the search a lot easier.

Also, do all MIB2 support CarPlay etc.?

Only if it has been specced or retro fitted i think.

Some early MIB2 units did not have CarPlay at all (factory or retrofit) but anything built in 2016 is pretty much safe

This is correct. CarPlay could be optioned on cars with MIB2, but it wasn’t standard. It can be retrofitted to MIB2 but not MIB1.

Is retro-fitting a simple Job? Costly?

I have a Feb 16 production R and it doesn't have MIB2.

The way to tell is the Voice button by the screen, if it has that then you have the Apple/Android features etc. Mine has the Mute button which doesn't.

I’m very surprised by that, I thought every car from July 2015 had it. My 65-plate does.
