I've the A4 Allroad with the V6 Diesel and I get mid 40's mpg. The first couple months it was lower mpg but I think it's crept up as the engine has loosened off. Drove from Glasgow to Aberdeen the other day and got 48-49 mpg.
To get 50+ mpg you'd have to drive very gently, downhill with the wind behind you all the time...

Picked up my new A5 3.0 Diesel coupe today. Impressed with the build quality. only driven it back from the dealers 90% motorway at 70. returned 55.7 mpg. I know this is not what I will get day to day but still pretty good for a 3.0 just out of the box. Engine silky smooth compared to my E Class 250 CDI.

Get an App like Fuelio on your phone and measure it tank to tank to get an accurate MPG reading.VAG ones are usually pretty good, but if you're injectors are out or some other sensor is faulty it throws the reading out.
So it's a good indicator of a problem.
