Could experienced PHers let me know if the Phaeton 3.0 TDI V6 4Motion:

is worth a shot at £3k as a winter car?

My plan would be to get winter tyres on it, have it looked at by a good independent, and sort out the damaged panels by a good Chipsaway man.

If anything goes catastrophically wrong with it, I'll scrap it.

Otherwise, I keep the car until it runs into the ground.

Thanks

I'd say for £3K and your mindset of throwing it away if anything major goes wrong is the right way to approach it. It does have a very basic spec though.
They can be very expensive to maintain if you don't have a decent independent, I bought my V10 Phaeton despite many horror stories nearly four years ago and it's still only cost me £500 extra for PAS pipes over standard oil and filter changes.
With winter tyres and four wheel drive it'll be a great winter car and will save you ruining a prized second or third car. I've grown very attached to mine and can't bring myself to get rid of it.

You can get an A6 or A8 for similar money mileage etc

A8 is basically the same car, A6 slightly smaller, depends what you want.

Something reliable (i.e. on a very old car, something which I have a good shot at running for another 6 months) and fully loaded is always a bonus

Do you see suggest anything specifically I should look out for on a 3k budget? A8 and A6 are both fine for me, I just need the 4 wheel drive and I'll add winters onto it.

Where will you draw the line?

A £500 bill? £1,000?

If the cost of the quoted work is more than the trade in value of the car. I have heard Phaeton repair costs can be horrific which I why I started the thread. But for 3k it seems like an ok gamble
