DSG automatic problems, advice needed
Discussion
A friend bought a 2009 Passat 2.0 TDi with and automatic DSG transmission and things went wrong for him. He is the opposite of a car guy so I thought I'll ask on here for him as I do know a bit more about cars. Though his description of what happened is rather poor. But here it goes anyway:
The flywheel was noisy so he had it replaced but there was something else wrong in there (noise from the clutch area or something) so he took it to another cheap garage to be take apart to see what's going on. They said something was faulty in there and it damaged the new fly wheel and it has to be replaced again (apparently they showed him the damage). After they fixed it apparently they had to sync the electronic part of it. After that when my friend was driving home apparently the gear-change was very rough and he was going to take it back to them the next day (today) but then he went for one more drive and the car stalled and all the dash lights lit up. I think last night he had it towed by the RAC to that cheap garage.
He's bought this car recently and he bought it despite the turbo whistling and noisy flywheel. So he already had the turbo sorted and now all this trouble with the transmission so I feel sorry for him and want to get some advice if possible what is the best course of action for him to get it sorted properly.
What do you guys think he should do? I had to google DSG as I am a manual-only driver and know nothing about that new stuff. So all advice and input regarding what went wrong will be welcome.
Cheers!

If he bought it recently, did he take it back to the supplying dealer to fix?
Did it come with a warranty?
From what I've read, it sounds like he bought it from garage A, but has had work done at garage B. In which case I fear garage A will wash their hands of the problem.
He really needs to get it in somewhere where they know about VW DSG boxes.

He bought it privately. After the first garage fixed his turbo and flywheel he had spent almost what he paid for the car and was panicking. He then took it to a garage that is run by some Polish guys because someone told him they are cheap but good. False economy I guess. How does one go about finding a garage that are knowledgeable in VW DSG gearboxes? I'm a DIYer and have no experience in dealing with the garages. He lives in near Crawley in West Sussex if anyone has recommendations.

I'd hazard a guess VW may have a clue. Be under no illusion, fixing this is going to make his eyes water....Call Dean @ http://4rings.co.uk
Based in dartford, but have mobile units iirc. Used them for servicing when I ran an Audi, very decent bloke who took pride in his work, knew what he was talking about and charged a fair rate.
Good luck OP!

Just found out that my friend sold that car to the last mechanics to work on it for £1k... I didn't ask but I think he lost £4k...
I tried asking wtf happened but he wasn't able to tell me anything as he is clueless when it come to cars. At the end they told him he needs a new gearbox... How the f
k can a car go from flywheel change to needing a new gearbox? Are DSG gearboxes so bad? I have never looked into DSG gearboxes but I quite like the idea and thought I might get one one day but now I am worried.

Some have had problems, others not.I had a 2004 A3 3.2 DSG (so one of the first and, by all reports troublesome) and did over 80k with no problems. I hope my S4 (22k so far) does as well...
Just posted an update in the Audi forum on my recent issues with the DSG / MCU on my 04 3.2 DSG TT.
You should give these guys a call - http://www.bristolgearboxcentre.com/ - worked miracles for me when others said nothing could be done.

This is about the 6th time I heard one of these polish garages doing this. Fix a car or so they say. Something goes wrong it's then back and the car is much worse but we'll ''buy it'' as it's worth noting now.. guess what the car will be properly fixed this time and sold at a profit
Wow! That's a pretty scathing judgement and completely wide if the mark. Bristol Gearbox provide a lifetime warranty on the work they carry out and were nothing but professional.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
