I've had my 2007 Touareg v10 altitude DPF since Februaury.

I recently took it to the dealership for a major service, they mentioned it had an oil leak but they couldn't identify where it was coming from.

Last week I took it for an MOT I got my friend who works at the garage to have a look for the leak.

He said it's coming from one of the turbos and that the engine will have to come out **GULP** for it to be replaced with a brand new turbo at £2k+!

The question is do I go down the replace with new route or should I hedge my bets and get a reconditioned turbo?

Does that 2k include labour to remove /refit the engine?

I'd be looking to get your own turbo repaired/overhauled if it were me. I'd also be seeking second /third opinions to double check you really do need the motor removing for access to the turbo.

Yeah it includes the labour for removal and fitting, he estimated approx 2 days labour. A new turbo is ~£1200 so £800 will be labour.

Just not sure about how reliable reconditioned turbos are... anyone got any experience of using them?

Suppose there's no harm in getting a second opinion. Maybe I should try a v dub specialist?

These are rather notorious for this issue, trust me do both at the same time as the other one WILL go soon too. Re Conned as new turbo about £400 if you go direct to Universal Turbo's

I would go for a genuine garret/kkk/bw unit (whatever they are).

Thanks for the recommendation, seems like a clued up company. Have you used them before and was it a reliable fix? I just don't want to be replacing turbos as often as I replace tyres...

If I do go down the reconned route I'll most likely get them both done together at that price though.
