Hi PHs
Im new to the forums, but has been following various chats and discussions on the side for a while.

I just bought myself a VW R32 Mk5 fittet with a Milltek catback exhaust.

Is there any way i can get it to pop and bang like the newer Audies (RS3/RS5 and alike) from a remap keeping the cats so that i can still get the car through emissiontests without removal or refitment of a decatted/catted system?

Cheers from Denmark - Emil

I guess you need to speak to a VW tuning specialist who will make you a custom map that includes what you want. Not sure if you can make them so the farting noise like Audi does if yours is a manual, but if you have a DSG is might do it.

Not really a fan of it myself, a few burbles on the overrun is one thing, but I'm not all that convinced by the 'popcorn' sound that seems to be all the rage now.

I love a decent sound from an exhaust, or induction, it sounds great, but please, fake pops and bangs, jesus Christ man get a grip...................

They won't sound fake at all. We put them on Evo's and scoobs all the time and no one ever complains how crap they sound and they're deliberately mapped in.
Example:

These are mapped in to make that sound on purpose and sound good. Bare in mind the car is over 120db on full chat so the bangs and pops are incredibly loud and agressive. Replacing exhaust gaskets is pretty common when its like this

You may be able to get them mapped in, depending on the level of control the programmer can have over your ECU. You're looking for the injection phase to overlap with the exhaust phase because the bang is unburt petrol blowing up in the exhaust. The maps that are made to suit this see, as I understand it, some injection of fuel just after the ignition event. Since there is no spark, this will be sucked out through the exhaust valves where the heat and oxygen in the exhaust make it combust.

It's definitely something that can be created artificially but only if you can edit the above mentioned parameters on your ECU.

My old 106 Rallye loved to pop and bag but that was a very old skool way of doing it, it wasn't predictable and usually came during a full-bore upshift whilst really going for it. It was loud and dramatic, nothing like the popcorn machine noises you hear a lot these days.

The way we do it is introduce negative timing in the lower load cells. -20 degrees is a good example as well as richening up the same cells on the fuel map a little. Does make it jerky in normal driving. Some Evo's still have SAS, it was designed to get around anti lag in rallying so you just open that up and inject air into the exhaust side. Quite simple to do in the grand scheme of things but it all depends if the OP's car has the capability to allow such hooliganism

Thanks for all your comments. My question is not as much related to weather or not the car can make the sounds im after, more so what i need to do for it to so and especially if i can keep my cats or not? I really do want to keep the cats yet still have the option of having a map that can do a little pop-crackle on intended overrun throttle action. smile

You might find that your car just does it anyway with the exhaust fitted. I stuck a cat-back system on my V6 with the centre silencers deleted and it now sounds like a gatling gun on overrun. The cats and emissions go unharmed too.

Definitely possible with cats, as said above. My Cerbera did it with cats and the standard exhaust, as did my (catted) Caterham - quite soft pops on the overrun and on upshifts. The maps on both cars weren't the best, which I think contributed.

My old Clio 197 popped and crackled when I had the centre silencer removed. It was otherwise totally standard cats and all thumbup

Much shorter exhaust route; open cans with no Cats = any excuse to post my bike on overrun!!

But the overrun on this TTRS engine is insane:

It can be mapped in and there are plenty of tuners that will do it. But removing the centre box will probably go some way to giving you pops and bangs naturally. You will probably get a lot of drone though when cruising.

Personally I think getting it mapped in so that on every time you lift your foot off the accelerator is a bit daft but it’s your car. Much better when the Car naturally does it cause it’s being driven properly wink

Have a look on the r32 Facebook page there are a few people who have had it done and there is a tuner that posts vids up every now and then of cars spotting flames and sounding like a shotgun on the overrun. Or if Facebook isn’t your thing the r32oc is a good place to look.

Can't see mapping for pops/bangs/farts being a good thing for the engine? Surely mapping is done to make the most of performance/efficiency.

IMO, deliberately making it pop for sake of it is just wrong? What next, a flamer exhaust, spinning/LED hubcaps...? nono

Sports car manufacturers have been mapping like this for a while now - there is no need for it but it adds drama where there would be none otherwise.

It is so precise that on some cars you can literally count the number of individual additional injector pulses that the ECU provides; all 'just for the noise.

Yup, its 4inch straight through to a 5.5inch tailpipe. No silencers or cats or backboxes. 2.2bar of boost and you get a lot of noise. Never been pulled for noise, so the police round here don't mind it

Above 85db is considered harmful.

Decat pipe. Problem solved.
