My trusty station car, VW TD Sport has come up for a timing belt and a service. It’s an 08 and does 4K per year. The local independent garage has quoted me just under £1,200, including water pump. Maybe I’m just getting tight but that’s a lot of coin for an old ubiquitous car. Surely most owners are slipping on maintenance. I won’t but i can imagine most would

That's ridiculous.

Get some more quotes from elsewhere. No way is £1200 a good price.

You should be looking at up to approx £500 for a belt with water pump and probably no more than £300 for a 40k (major) service.

If you're at a tin-shed garage or miles from London maybe even a bit less than that.

Edit: Forgot to ask, am assuming a 4 cylinder engine.

yep, i saw that, thanks. I don't know what the independent garage is smoking. Back to main dealers for the old girl, then smile and yes it's a Golf 2.0

The indie we use (in the NW) charged £500 for cam-belt and water pump and a basic service. He had a bit of a whinge about the VW fixed price. I think ~£400 inc VAT is typical from a recognised indie. At the time (couple of years ago) Inchcape dealers were doing belt and pump for £349.

On another forum I use someone said his local VW indie in the SE told him to get it done at the dealer! Personally I wouldn't use Inchcape if they did the job free.

The CB/water pump is 620 using VW parts and 520 using generic parts. Dealer it is. Then I’m selling it. Il get something that doesn’t need a timing belt or at least 2009 onwards require a change every 5 years.

I'd sell/trade it in as it is then, you'll never get that money back on a sale.
