Had a call from my other half earlier saying the car (2014 gti) was blowing cold air from the vents when turned to hot. The car had been running for over 15 miles and the temp gauge was reading under a quarter which is straight away telling me thats not right. When i got home this evening i could see the gauge rising only when stationary to well over its usual halfway settling point but plummeting when driving.

My immediate thoughts are stuck thermostat. But previously she called to say the check engine light has come on,temp gauge still reading low but also the active cruise control and front impact assist has flashed up as being deactivated. To top it off the hill hold assist has chucked the towel in too!!

Would one knackered thermostat affect so many other functions? Could it be sending mixed messages to the ecu and in turn making it shut off stuff??? I hate modern cars frown

I had the same on an Ibiza a few years back caused by the radiator having lost all the coolant. So will be worth checking the level under the bonnet, as risk damaging it if you keep driving! Either way probably best to get it to the dealers sooner rather than later. If it's just out of warranty they might still sort something for you if the car has a full VW history.

Also active cruise control and front impact assist disable by default when the car has engine related problems, so that is probably nothing to worry about.

I had a temperature issue on my '13 plate Mk3 Octavia VRS (petrol) and it sounds like it is the same thing - the thermostat is electronically controlled, and needed replacing. It's a reasonably well-known fault; cost about £400 from a specialist I seem to recall. If you're anywhere near Essex I recommend VWAuditec (no affiliation etc, just happy to have found a decent trustworthy indy)!

Thanks guys. The car was from Farnell Jag in Bradford and is under their approved used car warranty. They have asked me to get it booked into my local VW garage as I live in Stoke and they are sorting the bill through the warranty. I managed to figure out the hill assist....you have to have the seatbelt on and as I was on the driveway trying to diagnose I didn't have it on so the damn thing wasn't functioning! (face slap)

Coolant level is fine but I'm calling VW first thing to get it in.
