Jesus I'd like to encounter the guy who thought up the packaging for the A6. You need three wrists and eyes on stalks, a superhuman level of dexterity and the patience of a saint. I nearly cried when I dropped my only Torx30 bit halfway through re-tightening to power steering clamp.

It doesn't help that the youtube vids all show 2.0 cars, whereas mine has a somewhat tubbier 2.7 TDi, so there is just zero wriggle room.

Pain.

Many cars I find it easier to just remove the headlights.

Doesn't that make it difficult to drive in the dark?

What you need is a plastic surgery specialist consultant. I was helping a friend change a headlight bulb, it was rather tight. I suggested I remove the headlight.
She suggested I point out where he bulb needed to go, she then changed it in seconds. Excellent skills.

I went to Halfords( don’t flame me) after looking at what you had to do to change them , especially the offside one, so got a set of Osram night breakers which were on special offer.
If you want them fitted it was £8 so I said yes please so chap comes out and says will not take long, does the passenger side in 5 minutes and then goes to do the other one, looks puzzled, looks inside inner wing, then goes inside shop and comes out with 2 other guys who then have a bit of a meeting and one knows what to do.
1/2 an hour later all is done 🤣 best £8 I have spent

V.funny. Sounds like Halfords are making a loss offering that service for the A6.

The HID main bulbs are much easier to access, but the real bh is the sidelight bulb, it's near the front of the headlight and these units are really deep.

Try a B7 S4, no frigging room either side with a big V8 stuck in an A4 chassis.

I was at a friends last time my offside main bulb went.

Having used Halfords in High Wycombe before, I drove to the nearest Halfords to my friend's. Three of them took 40 minutes and then couldn't do it.

They kept coming back and saying they were struggling. Having done it myself in the past - but not wanting to because it was freezing and I didn't have any clothes I could get dirty - I kept saying to them, I can show you how to do it.

But being pig-headed, they wouldn't listen and eventually said I'd have to take it to a dealer.

At which point I told them that the guys in Wycombe had done it numerous times and they were useless.

In the end, I kept the bulbs, but got a refund for the fitting, drove back to my friends, and did it myself in less than 15 minutes - but I did get dirty. The key is knowing what to do with the airbox - you need to split it in half by unclipping it. Otherwise it won't come out.

I bought two bulbs because every time I've changed one (or had one changed) one on the other side goes within a couple of weeks.

Sure enough, the dipped nearside bulb went two weeks later. I've never changed one on that side, but I'd heard it was easier. So I read online about undoing the power steering pump etc, but I just managed to move it aside enough to get my wrist in and change the bulb by feel. I think it was easier because I'd just done the other one and remembered how the clip works. But that one took less than 5 minutes.

I don't think I could reach the normal headlight bulb from there though.

Yeah - the outside bulbs are OK - the inboard and sidelight bulbs are a nightmare. I ended up moving the pump down, then sticking my hand through the clamp, then into the light body, around the re-leveling motor and twiddling about with my fingertips.
