My A1 Sportback 1.4TSFi (122) 2012 7 speed S-Tronic is due a major service. At 5 years old I'm happy to look outside the main dealer and specialists for routine servicing items. However, I'm getting conflicting information and huge differences in cost as a result. I've got quotes from a local main dealer, Audi specialist, and a trusted non-specialist service centre I've used for various cars over a number of years. The local main dealer and specialist are quoting for replacing the timing belt (and water pump), yet the non-specialist has suggested this engine has a timing chain which shouldn't need replacing for ages yet. From looking online I suspect he may well be right? Another item the main dealer has quoted is for S-Tronic oil change - my non-specialist is questioning if this is a lifetime item or not. And lastly no one has mentioned a Haldex oil change, even though it's listed in the service book as being recommended at 38k miles and I know it wasn't done at the last service (36k 2 years ago - Audi Longlife service schedule). As my local service guy is asking £120 for the main service items, and the Stealer whats £1200 - I'm leaning towards using the local service guy, but equally I don't want to miss any service items that should be done. Any advice on who's got it right?

It will be a timing chain so definitely no belt to change, the 7-speed DSG fitted to these doesn't need oil changes and Haldex oil would only be needed for a Quattro

Bit worrying some of the nonsense main dealers are coming out with these days, makes you wonder what would actually get changed if you paid the £1200 scratchchin

When I had my A3, 3.2 (camchain) the dealer sent me a cambelt change reminder letter, followed up by a phonecall. silly

Ironically a couple of years later it needed a new camchain because the tensioner failed... frown

That's a timing chain.

That box doesn't have a scheduled oil change.

You don't have Haldex (that's the rear diff in quattro A1/A3/Q3/TT).

Have the spark plugs already been done?
