Hi all,

I have a friend who has a 2002 Passat 2.0 petrol that’s approaching 100k miles and has thrown up an engine speed sensor fault in vcds.

Now, while he is happy to pay to have that replaced, the puzzling thing is, it doesn’t happen all the time but it throws up an abs fault on the dash and when looking at the fault code for the abs it says to check Dtc in the engine module, which is the g28 fault.

Are the two related somehow?

He has recently replaced the battery and when He got in it this evening he turned on the climate as the windscreen was misted up and the engine stalled, and the headlights went dim (they were like this before he did the battery but had improved massively with the replacement fitted).

Any pointers appreciated!

What was the exact fault code wording? If it was "implausible signal - intermittent", that's usually a sign the crank sensor is on it's way out. It's just a coil and a magnet and they last a very long time, but eventually years of heat cycling, corrosive oil vapour and engine swarf conspire to kill it off.

Yes engine speed and load are tied into the ABS ECU for traction control. You will get an ABS fault code if the air mass meter fails as well.

That can cause people to misdiagnose ABS controllers as the fault, unless there is definite wheel speed sensor failure.

Brilliant thanks.

Turns out, it also goes into limp mode as well.

I’ll get the proper wording from him

Ok fault reading is...

Address 01: Engine

16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)

P0322 - 35-10 - No signal - intermittent.

Readiness: 0010 1101

And for the ABS module..

Address 03: ABS Brakes

18256 - Please check DTC memory of Engine Controller

P1848 - 35-10- - Intermittent.

So, with what you are saying, the ABS controller is telling us to check engine module that shows up the speed sensor fault?

Cheers!
