2007 Touareg - getting iphone bluetooth

Hi all
Wife has a 2007 touareg Altitude which has Bluetooth built in but won't pair with her iphone.
From reading, the module in it will only work with some nokia and other phones.
Does anyone have any experience or advice for fixing this?
I have also read that a later Bluetooth module is plug and play and allows pairing but wasn't sure how true this is and £150 for the module on ebay, it seems an expensive punt.
Any advice greatfully received.
