Just having a look for the next gen of S8's, I saw this - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Unless I'm missing anything glaringly obvious, that my response will be 'of course!!', can anyone think of a cheaper way to get in to a 360bhp car?

I'll trust you, I just read it in the ad. But still, any way to get in to 335bhp for less?

Edit, the Autotrader specifications at the bottom of the ad, auto-filled IIRC, also state 360bhp?

Hmmm, HPI says 335 and they’re normally bang on.

Apparently earlìer ones had 4Valves/cylinder and were 335bhp, later ones were 5Valves/cylinder and 355bhp. Crossover year was 99, so this should have the higher power. That's just from Wikipedia, but i remember doing various bits of forum research when I was looking to buy one and hearing that later models were more powerful.

I bought an Alpina B10 V8 in the end anyway smile

Edit: found this. Extra £250 will get you extra waftability, an extra 15bhp, and an extra load of wood and leather biggrin

...and it's illegal to sell 'trade' to the public. The dealer probably also knows it's going to be a money pit wink

These old tanks churn out 500:

What's that worth realistically; couple of K?

That dealer has quite a selection of S8s, but has had them for quite some time.....

355bhp is the quoted figure for facelift cars with drive-by-wire throttle, but the auto box saps a lot of power, being an old school 5 speed ZF. It's the known weak point as mileage rises, but by no means the end for any car that's otherwise in fine fettle. The owner would need to be prepared to cough a few k for a box change/refurb when the inevitable happens (or find a receipt in the history for one at previous owner's expense)

They are lovely cars (I miss mine a lot) but you need to be able to live with 16mpg on premium unleaded and associated running costs for what was Audi's flagship model BITD. Audi are also dropping parts hand over fist, which is making it more difficult to keep one mint.

At that price drive it and wait for it to throw an expensive bill (other than filling the tank!) having decided whether it's a keeper or not smile

Can't think there's much else cheaper, although there's probably faster less powerful options. My 330ish bhp S5 would eat the S8 for breakfast in a straight line.

Indeed.

A friend of mine ran one for a year or so, and despite the power, was very underwhelming.
