VW TDI ATD Engine Oil 505.01 505.07 Shell PD 100bhp
Discussion
Hi, I have just purchased 5 litres of Shell Engine Oil HX8 ECT 5w-40 (Eurocarparts Product Code: 521773571) for use in my Beetle 1.9TDI, which has an ATD engine. I selected this product after using the Eurocarparts product selector - I entered in my reg number and that oil came up. However after looking at the bottle, there is no mention of 505.01 or 507.00 VW spec - It has Dexos2, amongst others, nut no VW spec. I have used the oil and the engine is running fine. Put I have a nagging feeling in the back of mind about this. Should I change the oil to 505.01/507.00 spec, or leave it for 10k? Any thoughts would be welcome..
Looking on the Shell website the oil you have is approved to :
API SN/CF; ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4; MB approval 229.3; VW 502.00/505.00; Renault RN0700, RN0710. Meets the requirements of Fiat 9.55535-N2 and 9.55535-M2
I think 505.00 refers to the pre PD era of VAG diesels. 502.00 is for Petrol engines.
If yours is a PD then I think as you said it should be 505.01 minimum. As I understand it the PD specific oils have wear addictives to protect the camshaft lobes from wear under the extreme pressures they operate at compared to earlier engines with a rotary pump.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will have to refill with Quamtum Longlife III 507.00 from VW, which is about the same price as the Shell oil from Eurocarparts. I have tried to raise the issue with Eurocarparts, all they say is if the oil came up when I used the online selector from my vehicle reg, then it will be the correct oil. I asked them why hasn't the oil got 505.01 or 507.00 on it then? They said it probably exceeds VW own spec, but they don't know (maybe SHell have iformed them it is OK), so I am awaiting a further reply from their Head Office, if it is an error on thier part, I will get a refund and compensation for labour/filter - I will keep you posted. I contacted Opie oils for advice - they said Shell no longer produce oils to 505.01 spec, they are all to 507.00 spec now. I also phoned TPS, they said Quantum Longlife III 507.00 is used now for all time/distance and longlife services by VW. I am not happy with Eurocarparts, but it is my own fault - I should of checked the container before using the stuff. I only when to Eurocarparts because VW was shut at the time (it was a Saturday afternoon).
I can't find a reference to it being PD friendly 505.01 or better anywhere. If ECP state that this is because it exceeds 505.01 then ask them why do shell only claim 505.00 and 502.00 on their website:
https://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-lubricants/hel...
You'd surely not claim only 505.00 and 502.00 from the early 1990s if it was actually 507.
ECP also lists my daily, an 06 Octavia TDI PD 4x4 as using that shell oil too along with Castrol Magnatec C3 which isn't 505.01 either.
If you need 505.01 then you need Castrol Edge for example.
You can get Millers Oils TRIDENT Longlife V 5W-30 which is 507 for £27 per 5L from Opieoils. I'd go with that.
