Hi all,

Currently own a Mk6 Golf, previously a Mk4. I am however getting itchy feet, and, with the miles on the Mk6 starting to rack up, I'm looking at upgrading.

I love my Golfs, and have always wanted a GTD. Whilst the Mk6 GTD's are nice, I feel the Mk7's are a slicker, more modern shape and so have been eyeing up them recently. However, after having seen several really nice 'Roccos about, I'm starting to look at them too. Whilst the GTD is still a firm favourite, the Roccos seem to have more gadgets for less, i.e, it's hard to find a GTD with both heated seats and a SatNav, but then some of the Roccos have both of them, but no DAB..

Any advice from GTD owners or Rocco owners, past or present? Which would you recommend, any useful information or things to watch out for would be gratefully received, as I really am stuck between the two!

Cheers smile

I've got a 16 reg GTD & I'm sure most from a 15 reg onwards will come with both heated seats & Nav as I think both were standard from 3015 onwards, try & find one with Pro Nav, it gives you a bigger screen, voice control, 2 or 3 SD card slots, much better operating system, the early ones were a bit clunky & slow. The Mk7 GTD comes with a decent standard spec, so you could find a fair few with what you want, I've also got Dynaudio & it's great, well worth searching one out with it if you like your music.

I've somehow never owned a Scirocco even though I've thought on many times it would've been ideal for me. I have had a Mk7 GTD though which I ran for 37k miles over 18-months and liked. It's not the most exciting of cars but it's quick enough, economical and very well equipped. Definitely a very competent all rounder for any situation. Go for a mid-2015 or newer for standard fit Nav and heated seats.

I would expect the Scirocco will feel quite a bit more dated given it's Mk5/ Mk6 Golf underpinnings. So won't drive as nicely, older generation infotainment and no auto handbrake etc. Does look nicer though!

I have a 63 reg GTD with both heated seats and (not pro) nav, wasn't hard to find. Racked up 30k in 15 months with no faults, which is a pleasant change from the 3.0 TDI A4 Avant I had previously.

Bearing in mind the switching on of the speed cameras on the M1 recently I did 320 miles today (mostly M1/M25) at around 75mph and got nearly 53mpg.

SkyRocket not an option for me as need the space in the rear.

Scirocco is just your Golf in a pretty dress, seriously antiquated now. MK7 feel a million times better, plus ACC as standard (DSG is a must for this to work well). As a previous poster alluded too there was a spec uplift if memory serves late 2015 early 2016 which got Nav, Heated seats and Keyless entry as standard, and also the screen size increased from 5.8" to 6.5" inline with the Polo. Nav Pro is alright, certainly not worth paying a massive premium for, but if you find one with the Tech Pack you get Nav Pro and Dynaudio together. I've had 3 as used to sell VW, any questions I'll try to help.

Scirocco is a mix of MK5/6

- Massive doors, what is your parking situation like?
- Zero rear visibility, sensors are a must
- Rare compared to the hatch variants

Thanks for all of your inputs.. much appreciated!

I have always fancied the GTD more than the Rocco.. they do look the part and the interior is (IMO) awesome! Since posting I've found a couple of 15 & 16 plates on AutoTrader with both the heated seats and Nav, so like you suggest the newer models seem to have more in them. I think the Rocco is out of the question for now!

Only decision now is the colour.. black or grey.. biggrin

My sister had a black GTD, I’ve got a Carbon Steel Grey GTD & she always preferred the colour of mine. Plus black GTDs are everywhere as it was the free colour, CSG was an option colour.

I think the black looks stunning when it's all polished up, and looks so stealth! But the Carbon Steel Grey also looks really nice, I've owned a black Golf before (my Mk4) and my Mk6 is Silver.. like you say, I do see a lot of GTD's in the black, makes sense if the CSG was an optional extra..

Carbon Grey metallic is the colour to have, bespoke to GTI and GTD.
