As someone who has owned a couple of cheap cars as toys (currently an MX-5) I'm having my head turned recently by early TTs..... they do seem to represent a lot of car for the money and in the case of the 225, a pretty brisk one really...but are they any good? Accepted PH/EVO Magazine wisdom seems to be that the drive is a bit sterile...so is that true or are they under-rated? A colleague at work loved his TT (admittedly a mk2) and this is someone who previously owned a 987 Boxster and has driven McLarens, Ferraris etc.....

...Would appreciate feedback from past and current owners.....

I think the Mk1 TT is a great little car.

Cheap, good looking, plenty of power for the road and never get out of shape unless you're an idiot.

Loved mine.

If in good health (most now are badly worn) they still make for a pretty rapid cross country machine.

A car to drive on its door handles? Probably not, although if you're the sort of nutter that drives like that on the road then it probably isn't for you anyway.

Wildly tunable on a sensible budget if you like playing with things.

Our track car is an A3 1.8T quattro (mechanically very close to a TT) and that's a good fun old thing to sling around/abuse. Proven very resilient, doesn't give a crap if the road/track are sodden, and cost all-in about £4k.

I owned one for about 6 years and loved it.

But I was under no illusion that it was a 'driver's car'.

Certainly when I drove it back to back with an early 2.5 Boxster that my wife borrowed for the weekend, it felt anodyne in comparison. And I'm guessing it would against an MX5 too.

I liked ours as it was the first new car either of us had ever had, it was very good looking (back in 2002), it was fairly rapid for what it was.

As we sold ours over 10 years ago now, I'm not up on what people are up to in terms of modding these days.

But if you can find a good one and are prepared to throw some money at it, then extra power is cheap and people were introducing Haldex mods which sent more power to the rear wheels. They're essentially a front wheel drive car, which only puts power to the rears once a slip is detected.

As the TT is an old car, even though ours was very low mileage we decided to refurb the suspension and it has completely transformed the car.

Ended up going with Bilstein B12 suspension (ability to lower the car) with Cupra top mounts and the car handles a lot more sweetly. Admittedly its not Lotus standard but definitely worth doing as it has tightened up the car completely and makes it more enjoyable on the back roads.

However be aware that TT's can cost a reasonable amount of money to keep on top of if your are fastidious. There are a lot of bodged cars out there with owners who spend as little money on their upkeep.

Sadly however its now up for sale
