Any thoughts on intakes:
  • VWR
  • Revo
First one is quite a bit more expensive than the other, and I can see a single pipe being smoother than a multi-part. However, Revo one is an open filter in a section of the engine bay, while the VWR is taking a feed direct from the front of the car.

Anyone got any particular experiences of both and which way they went in the end?

1st and foremost the important part is actually the turbo inlet pipe, That's the restrictive part

Look for a turbo Technics Intake pipe

R600 Intake is a Good call

Fair enough.

What puts those two you suggested higher than the two I listed?

I can understand the need to remove breathing restrictions, and I'm only going on references I've seen elsewhere, but I'd like to know what puts those to ahead.

Also, I can see that the R600 unit will need a host of pipework behind it, unless this one section removes the bulk of the air restriction on its own.

I'm not sure where your going with this mate?

I'm going on what I fitted to my 7R, Stage 2

I had:
DV+ Valve
Wagner Intercooler
R600 Intake
TT inlet pipe
Decat downpipe attached to standard backbox
Remap and DSG flash
It made well over 400bhp

Tried and tested by 100's over on the rforum.

I'm sure other parts work alright,

  • Revo is an open air Intake and the Golf R runs hot in standard form never mind after a map, That heat in the bay is going to raise inlet temperatures simply because it's pulling air straight from the engine bay, The R600 collects it from the front grill in a sealed unit.
TT inlet pipe greatly increases the amount of air reaching the turbo, I don't think any Intake replaces this as part of the box, but is good for 10-15bhp on its own

Best bang for buck, Get a remap/R600/TT inlet pipe and be running a steady 370-380bhp for less then £1000

Not sure if it's still the case but VWR stuff was just rebranded product with a premium price and a Volkswagen .:Racing sticker.

Not a problem, I'm not going anywhere with anything really - no vested interest. I'll happily take advice from anyone.

This area is not somewhere I've been before, if you know what I mean. So I'm probably being cautious and asking not necessarily the right questions.

SO, logically it would be more cost effective to get the unbranded / un-rebranded element. So the question is where does that come from?

Ever heard the saying buy cheap buy twice?

Are you tuning your car? If not fitting anything is pointless

Fit the parts listed above you will have a rocket

Trust me in what I'm telling you is sound advice from somebody who has owned and tuned a lot of VAG cars

MK6 Golf GTI
Mk 6 Golf R
Mk 7 Golf R

Copy and paste my parts post on the s3 or Golf r forums and they will tell you my advice is sound

I think I'm going to get a rolling road remap done at Star Performance in Kirkcaldy, so the only question is whether I get the pipework in advance of the tune or just fit it after. Probably before, but that's just a gut feeling.

No point in getting a rolling road remap and then changing something that might affect performance. At best it won't be optimised and at worst it'll actually be worse...

Mate cancel that s*it who the hell is oscarli tuning?

Like I said before you get what you pay for: I have never heard of that tuning company

APR high torque, Roughly 380bhp but will need a gearbox remap also by APR if DSG as the clutch will slip without

APR low torque, Roughly 360bhp but lower torque to save clutches

Revo, Less Power but a sound map probably good for 350-360bhp but will save a manual clutch or DSG map without further modifications

Unicorn, 370-380bhp Bespoke remap with the ability to map back to standard of required, Guy called rick, This guy they all used to go mad for on the golf r forum, Very popular

Tuning box - JB1 or JB4 provide decent gains of up to 350/360bhp with the ability to keep warranty as is undetectable

In my opinion being as your in Scotland get an APR remap

Doesn't sound like your doing a good job with your homework mate, If it's not on the list above I would not entertain it

Look, this is my homework and exactly what I feared would happen is happening; those with 'the knowledge' damning all that they haven't heard of because they haven't heard of them. APR were my first choice, then I spoke to Star Performance and he sounded solid. The suggestion (and all of this is opinion and suggestion) is that he is well regarded despite who has and hasn't heard of him.

Also, dial down the vitriol is you can. I'm asking questions and just because it doesn't align with your immediate thinking doesn't mean its wrong. Not everyone has to follow the same path.

I thought the poor guy was talking about a new S3, I had a Revo stage 2 map on my 6R it blew my number 2 piston so I wouldn't recommend that on your platform

Any car tuner that says:

Oscarli ltd can modify and supply engine and gearbox software for passenger cars, motorsport vehicles, light commercial, heavy commercial, Agricultural and Marine applications. Re-tuning and calibration alterations for speed limits, power increase, torque increase, rpm limits, speed limiters, launch control activation, left foot braking activation, catalytic convertor removal, component deactivation and fault code deactivation are just a few of the possible solutions that we can offer. No project too big or too small.

So you can take your car to somewhere that seems to specialise in everything, Or go to a company which knows your car inside out!

I'm out spend your cash as you want
