Vw golf 2006 2.0L TDI

I’ve serviced my car and went to unhook the negative battery terminal to clean the terminals and battery. After cleaning I put the battery terminal back on. Turned on the car and it has the steering wheel light on in yellow. When I drive the car there’s power steering but the powersteering assist is not working. I’ve looked online at how to calibrate this by turning left then right then driving for 1 mile under 15mph but no luck.
Any ideas will be much appreciated?

Hi, do you think that will actually work? I did take the negative off for 15mins this morning and it did nothing but I would think it would still need recalibrating.

Is the battery charge rather low? Sounds just like our Skoda reacted in winter when the battery was a bit old and a lot of short runs meant it needed the CTEK on the job.

Hi Fif, thanks for your reply, The steering wheel light wasn’t on until I unhooked the battery then hooked the terminal back on the light appeared. I checked the battery voltage and it is 12.55V. I can’t see it being anything to do with the battery as the voltage is good and the steering assist was working until I unhooked the terminal.

Thanks for your reply. I have seen people comment on other forums saying to hook it to VCDS if you cannot manually do it. It’s got a MOT in 2 weeks so if it doesn’t go out by then I’ll ask them to recalibrate it.

Leave it disconnected for an hour.

Some people do a capacitive discharge (touch the two battery cables together) which expedites the process, but I don't like doing that personally.

I've done what you did before, a quick disconnect / reconnect, and then lost the driver's side door module completely. My yellow steering light wouldn't extinguish either.

I disconnected it again and left it for an hour, problem solved.
