Looking to breathe a bit more life into my mk5 gti, are the maps night and day different or mostly top end? Thinking an exhaust might also be worthwhile to add a bit of sound.

Actually, the low to mid end torque is dramatically improved with a map. The challenge is putting the power down on the road. Specifically in the wet.

I can’t comment on the benifits of an exhaust as I’ve never gone down that route, however I’m sure it will all help.

That's interesting, I assumed it was all top end. I think I will take the punt, been quoted £400 for a REVO map which seemed decent value to me. Should keep me going until I move onto one of the super hatches at some point.

Had our car done (same engine). The 100 ft/lb increase in torque was very noticeable from low revs.

Putting the power down can be hard work if it is even slightly damp but it makes you learn how to drive.

Check with them beforehand regarding the health of the car. The place that did mine said the cam timing chain had been noisy for a while and should be done before the re-map. Same with the oil pick-up pipe.

Don't bother with a cat back, the factory one is plenty good enough. A decent 3" downpipe with front cat delete is worth doing though.

Plenty of map choices out there.... Revo, Superchips, R-Tech, Racingline, Shark Performance, MRC and several more.

There are only so many ways you can command more boost and fuel from an ECU, so just pick the one closest to you.

Personally I don't like Revo. They are vague and secretive to deal with and they leave their software in the ECU permanently, and worse still, you have to re-enable the 'performance' map if you disconnect the battery. No other tuner does that.

As others have said, the map is definitely worth doing as it wakes up the car. Most will be relatively similar, although I had both of my GTIs done by AMD Tuning in Essex and they're very good. I went for a Milltek catback which sounded great without being obnoxiously loud, although if you want maximum performance gains just get a full turboback system.

I think Super chips have an offer on at the moment, very reliable provider of decent remaps.

I have used Revo a few times and never had a problem when disconnecting the battery.
In fact you even say the map is on the ECU permanently, so how could it loose the performance map? Not sure where you get that from.
Revo and Superchips Bluefin are proven maps, that's why you pay a bit more.

I personally had Regal tuning remap the same engine in a Audi A3 2.0 TFSI and it was good, especially for £150. They have dealers all around the country.

The revo map defaulting to a basic map when the battery is disconnected is well documented. It does not lose the map, but it needs reinitiating by a dealer or their (SPS?) module. There are plenty of options. I went with R-Tech as they are very well thought of and produce a custom map for the car, but they usually are booked out a little way in advance. In the top of the down pipe there is a pre-cat (looks like a ceramic honeycomb and is not a legal requirement in this country) that you can remove which improves engine response, mpg and gas flow and aids the remap (especially if getting a custom map for the car). Alternatively you could get an aftermarket downpipe.
