Hi, I’ve got a Vw golf and I’ve got the ABS light and traction control light on. I’ve plugged it into my scanner and it picked up

I changed the Rear ABS speed sensor thinking that was the obvious problem as the scanner picked it up, but when I plugged my scanner in and clear the code after fitting the ABS sensor the light goes out but the traction control light stays on the dash and there’s no way of getting rid of that. After going down the road the ABS light come back on, and the same code is still there. Can someone shed any light on this problem? Many thanks

Check the wiring to the connectors as these have a habit of corroding and breaking.
I'm not familiar with the setup on the golf but if the sensor is looking at a reluctor type ring then check it's clean and not cracked.
A live data type observation would help to see if the signal is intermittent if your scanner has this feature.

Just checking it was the offside rear sensor that you changed as sometimes people incorrectly take left / right from looking at the car from the front and not from sitting in the driver's seat. smile

I had a slightly later golf and they had a toothed ring on the hub that the sensor picks up the signal from, this had corroded and detached.

A new hub and ring fixed the issue with abs and traction light

Maybe the same for you?

I had that on my Mk5. Changed the rear hub and the problem went away.

Try turning your ignition off then on again while you are moving (under controlled circumstances on a private road obviously).
If the sensor or ring are faulty, it usually takes a little while for the light to come back again (anything from 100metres driving to a couple of days). If there is a break in the wires or fault in the ECU, it won't go off.
You might be really lucky and it fixes it permanently.

Hi jetbox, would your traction control light not even turn off by trying to clear the ABS code or even the traction control button? Thanks. I’m suspecting mine is the rear hub because I changed the rear drivers ABS sensor but with no luck.

Hi justinio, was your ABS ring on your rear hub not toothed and more of a thin diameter strip around it? Also did your traction control light refuse to go out even when clearing the ABS code until you fitted the rear hub? Thanks

Hi Cuprabob, it was the rear drivers ABS sensor when in the car that I changed. (Offside rear) thanks

Does it just need tracking? If the wheels aren't pointing the way the car thinks they should be you can get both lights on.

Hi DickyC, do you think that would be a possible cause? I would of not of thought so just because my scanner picks up

00287
Right rear ABS wheel speed sensor
-G44 Implausible signal

I would of thought this code would of ruled out the tracking? And would point more to the offside rear of the car. Car doesn’t seem to pull to either side and seems ok. Thanks

I don't know what my fault codes are but the car's ABS and Traction Control lights are on and it's knocking the bks out of the tyres. It's been in having the adjustment freed up and new track rod ends fitted ready for tracking tomorrow. I'll report back. It's an A4 not a Golf but the principles are probably the same.

Fix the cheap things first.

Thanks DickyC,

Hi all, I have done a live data report with my scanner and the rear right sensors speed is all over the place. Going at a speed of 20mph the other sensors all read 18 ish mph but the rear right is constantly changing every couple of seconds. At 20mph the rear right sensor is reading 38mph then something down the lines of 2mph then 12mph then 20mph then 30mph and so on just random. My thoughts are changing to the rear right wheel hub as I’ve changed the sensor. Maybe the ABS ring on the rear hub is all rusted and broken or just covered in crap.
Thanks guys

I had a Mk5 GTI and the hub has the bearing and abs ring attached to it. I'm not sure if the TDI is the same but I'd be surprised if it wasnt. Pretty common fault on Mk5's I believe.

The part is cheap and only took me about half an hour or so to do.

Thanks Justinio,

That’s good to know, I will be changing the rear hub a week today (7th). I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the reply mate.
