New B8 Passat Estate GT 2.0 TSI 220PS
Discussion
I collected my brand new B8 Passat Estate GT 2.0 TSI 220PS last week. Here are my thoughts after first week of ownership.

Spec:
Harvard Blue Metallic
Titan Black Nappa Leather
Integrated Child Seats
Rear View Camera
Electric Tailgate
Heated front windscreen
Heated steering wheel
Dynaudio "confidence" soundpack
Sports pack for DCC
Swiveling towbar
The 2.0 TSI engine also brings DCC, Premium LED headlights, XDS sports differential and the fake exhausts from the R-line trim.
I selected GT over R-line as you cannot get the integrated child seats and full leather in R-line. I also preferred the GT alloys, plus a saving of around 2k due to a some of options being cheaper on GT trim. I also think the car looks chunkier and more substantial without the R-line grille, a Passat is always going to be a family motor, so i think this suits!
As the car is brand new and i plan to keep it for a long time, so i have yet to fully test it's performance until the engine has a few more hundred miles on it. So far it is a very relaxing drive, plenty of torque and 6 Speed DSG is way nicer than the 7 Speed dry-clutch DSG in my Golf GT TSI 160.
All the tech is great, especially the active cruise and active display.
Concerns I had between ordering and delivery have all turned out ok:
You still get a full size spare wheel even with the Dynaudio soundpack - the subwoofer sits inside the wheel.
Integrated childseats are great, although my 4 year old is not quite tall enough - the seat belt was cutting across his neck slightly - so i have installed a regular childseat for now on his side. You do get isofix points even with the integrated seats.

If you are choosing a B8 and want any other detail please ask.

Great engine, had mine since last November (minus the leather) and now after a few thousand miles the engines loosened up nicely, not the best handling around twisty roads but loads of pull on straight bits.
Initial mpg was 26mpg but now its returning a respectable 35mpg which is only 7 lower than my previous 2ltr diesel a6.
Adaptive cruise control is a wonder but you have to dig through the mmi to shorten the default distance and i do find having no radio mute button on the wheel annoying.
Enjoy your new motor.

I think they have done quite well using physical buttons to call up things in the touchscreen menus, better than most cars. But yes there are niggles; why does the driver profile always go back to normal when you start the engine?!
33mpg long term average and 37 on a run. Hopefully this will improve as engine loosens up. Either way it’s not far off diesel it replaced and much nicer to drive.

Picked up the keys to mine yesterday, performance is a massive step down from my golf R that i had before but its so much more comfortable!

How do you turn off the A/C in the golf there was an off button where the rest button is on this, but rest doesn't seem to do anything?
Rest is for when you park up for a short time and want to keep the a/c running in the car. It works for about 30 minutes I think. How do you turn off the A/C in the golf there was an off button where the rest button is on this, but rest doesn't seem to do anything?

I’ll be picking one up that looks exactly like that in three weeks. Atlantic Blue R Line but mine is diesel.....How do you turn off the A/C in the golf there was an off button where the rest button is on this, but rest doesn't seem to do anything?
Fingers crossed on the comfort front as it’s going to do 30k miles a year.

Hopefully your £95 fill up will equate to more than 410 miles range! i do hope that goes up but even still it will be better than the golf was!Fingers crossed on the comfort front as it’s going to do 30k miles a year.
I honestly could see one of these as my next car - currently have a r - this or the superb probably - slightly more comfort oriantated for the long drive to the south of france.
Interesting on the MPG side - I have the new 7 speed dsg in the golf and usually get about 38 - 43 mpg depending on traffic / speed / air con etc - I guess with the passat being a bit heavier and also a 6 speed this is what is bringing down the mpg a bit. I got 43 mpg up to hull (400 miel round trip) when my golf was 1 month old with 800 miles on the clock.

My long term average at 3k miles is 35mpg from a mixed urban/motorway use on super unleaded. 40-50 mpg is achievable on motorway if taking steady. Coasting function on eco mode works well although isn’t enabled whilst on active cruise.
Bought a used one of these (66) plate in October last year...private sale on autotrader (ex company car)...Got a right bargin, it's an R Line edition....2.0 TDI and its fantastic, it has the Active Display too.
All in all, only missing bit was DSG, but i bought mine outright so really didnt fancy sitting on a potential fix for it in years to come...because i really do think I could keep this car longer than i've done leasemobiles.
I've had a few niggles to keep you all real;
-I've got a bit of road noise issue which I think might be tyres getting a bit unbalanced
-DAB is a bit splodgy in places where the A4 i had before wasn't
-Heaters in the Winter took an age to warm up
-Chrome trim has picked up marks that look lime scaley....
-Trim inside which might just be on R line is piano black and is getting scratched to buggery
Colour i've got (Silver Tungsten) is fantastic when i've cleaned/waxed it, it really is.
Without doubt the best VAG i've had for size/money/efficiency.

I picked up my Passat GTE (Hybrid) on 1st May having had a Golf R Estate for 15 months prior to that. The GTE was an 67-plate ex-demonstrator with almost 10K miles on the clock. As others have said, somewhat different to the R but nevertheless, massively impressive.
Fuel consumption is almost beyond belief - the worst I've had so far on a decent motorway trip in "Battery Charge" mode is around 45mpg with short journeys around town using no petrol at all. In Hybrid mode I've seen consumption figures around the 145 - 160mpg
The thing that is so difficult to get used to is the total silence!! Even when the petrol engine is started it's virtually silent until the revs get up to 4-5000.

THought about a new GTE on lease for consumption benefits but bottled it.Fuel consumption is almost beyond belief - the worst I've had so far on a decent motorway trip in "Battery Charge" mode is around 45mpg with short journeys around town using no petrol at all. 145MPG is that based on just electric? How much do you fill/charge up?
So much depends on the length of journey. Many of mine are in and around town so all done on electric. On longer journeys, hybrid mode tends to eek out the battery - a recent 180-odd mile trip finished with 5 miles left in the battery but that was mostly motorway with about 30 miles of rural roads at the end of the trip. That round trip was 367 miles at an average of 50mph and it returned 48.7mpg.
Over the first month I've done around 800 miles and averaged over 79mpg.

Appreciate this is an old post but hoping that tv90 will pick it up as my question is specific to the B8 Passat estate GT TSI 220PS.
I hope to change my Passat B8 GT TDI 150 ps manual for the
B8 Passat estate GT TSI 220PS in spring 2019.
There aren’t many around so getting reviews and feedback isn’t easy.
Most of the VW range uses the 7 speed DSG but this uses the 6 speed DSG and I’m interested to see what this combination feels like day to day.
You seem to get a lot of extras for your money (XDS traction control, dynamic chassis control and premium LED headlights) above the normal GT package.
I’m not bothered about the R line appearance package and GT has everything I need except leather seats which are cheaper on the GT than the R line.
Apart from the lower MPG’s is it fun to drive and more refined than the diesels which I’ve always found ok for long trips but less good for short?
Also tempted by the GT 190 ps TDI but by the time you add premium headlights there’s not much price difference, but of course you get lower running costs.
Mileage is about 12,000 pa
All feedback appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi Zumit
After 6 months of ownership I am very pleased with my Passat.
The only things I would do differently spec wise if choosing again is possibly dropping the DynAudio sound pack. It is nice but not sure if it is worth the outlay. And i would consider the driver assistance pack instead, I really like the Active Cruise Control, so more automation is worth considering!
I can agree with your thinking; the 2.0 TSI is good value as once you start adding things like DCC and Premium LED headlights to any of the lesser models the price increases rapidly. On the 2.0 you get these items included.
To drive it is pleasant rather than exciting, very quick off the lights when you want to surprise sports car drivers! The 6 speed DSG is very smooth, always in the correct gear. I haven't driven the TDI 190, so can't provide a comparison I am afraid. The way i looked at it; the 2.0 TSI will cost you a good couple of hundred quid a year more in fuel over the diesels but with the electrically powered future of motoring i wanted to take the opportunity to own a nice petrol motor.
When i was researching these reviews were the only ones i could find for the 2.0 TSI... the Autogefuhl review is the better of the two (he compares a 1.8TSI passat to a 2.0 TSI Superb plus explains about some of the options like progressive steering (worth having IMO)):
