Mk 2 TTS/TTRS v Mk 3 TTS/TTRS
Discussion
Hey
As some of you know I brought a mk 2 Audi TTS 6 months ago. (Car before was an S4)
Very impressed by the performance, equipment spec etc
I did some research and generally found the opinion to be the mk2 TTS is a better daily drive then the mk2 TTRS so i gravitated more to the TTS.
However, curiosity got the better of me and I started to look at the mk3 TTS. How is the drive, performance compared to the mk2 TTS and mk2 TTRS?
I booked a test drive in a TTS mk3 (monday) and when I got there Audi didn't have any TTS's BUT they did have a nice fully equipped nardo grey TTRS mk3.
I went for a drive in it and all I can say is wow.....what a car. And that virtual cockpit is amazing (i love tech so that is right up my street)
The pace, the equipment, the sound. Lovely car.
Has wetted my appetite for an RS now.
Just wanted to ask if anyone has driven all 4? How does the Mk2 TTS compared to the mk3 TTS? Is the mk3 TTRS that much better than the Mk3 TTS?
Where does the mk2 TTRS fit in?
Thanks guys.

Performance is an incremental improvement; very much the faster car but not a night and day difference. Power to weight is in the same ballpark. Ride and handling move on a fair degree. I really like the steering in the MK3, it feels nice and darty/direct but never hyperactive. Engine is more exciting (sounds a lot better) than MK2 TTS and most of the time it feels like it has all the performance you'll ever need but if you really string it all the way out it lacks that last 10% of fury the 5 cylinder has.MikeM3Power said:

I can do 3.5; not yet had a go in the new TTRS but have put a fair few miles on new RS3.MikeM3Power said:

You'll get out of the MK3 and feel like the MK2 is your grandad's car - they're still fun things but the MK2 is a 12 year old car now and it really feels it. Not only has tech come on a long long way (as you point out) but Audi have really worked on their ride/handling/chassis in that period.MikeM3Power said:

Generally speaking an 'S' is all things to all wo/men. An 'RS' sprinkles on the 'I want one'. If you need to justify the purchase then an RS is probably not for you. If the 'I want one' feeling you've already described is the important factor then buy it. Or if you just like sledgehammer performance, you'd need a Turbo S/GTR/P100D if you wanted to accelerate harder. Is the mk3 TTRS that much better than the Mk3 TTS?

Fast, cheap(ish), that wonderful 5 cylinder turbo. Problem being that if you're looking at a later MK2 RS you can afford a MK3 S which to my mind is a much better car. At sub 20k though they're hilarious and feel like a little hotrod. Thanks Dr G.
I am pretty happy with the sound of the mk2 TTS so anything louder would be a bonus. Of course getting back into the TTS after the RS it felt so slow.
Like painful slow and tame lol.
Really I need to actually test drive a mk3 TTS. I know the tech is miles ahead of the mk2 but I would really like to see the performance.
I understand what you mean though, if you are paying mid 20s for a mk2 TTRS better off paying that same for a mk3 TTS.
I felt like the TTRS (mk3) has ruined it for me lol, Like as soon as i got into it, the smile on my face was instant.
On a side note a friend of mine sold his C63 and went to start his spec on an RS5 down at Audi. Just by chance the rep said why dont you test drive the TTRS. He did eventually and literally put a deposit down for a brand new one on that day. He took delivery earlier this year.
Said it is the best car he has ever owned. Previously he has had a C63, Maserati (not sure which one), S5 etc. He was that impressed.
So far from your post Dr G I have got the following:
The New TTRS is top of the heap.
The New TTS is a very close second just losing out on that hooligan element (is it a better daily drive?)
The old TTRS very capable and quick car but you are looking at the same price as a new TTS so just get that.
The old TTS cannot really compare to the other 3 although it is still a very capable car.
Have to say I am a tech guy so the mk3 tech has me sold.
What does the mk3 TTS sound like? Still pop on upshifts like the mk2 TTS?
Thanks

Not so much a pop, as:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQuVSse0caY

Would like to say that yes you could get a new mk3 TTS for not much more than a mk2 TTRS but you would not lose as much money on the RS, time to get your man-maths calculator out though and go for the mk3 TTRS
The man math calculator came out as soon as I stepped into the mk3 TTRS

Realistically speaking I need to actually go for a drive in the TTRS mk2 and TTS mk3 really.

Lovely. So it does sound better then the Mk2 TTS.Listen to this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exAdiAFKlkA
It is same view etc just with higher quality noise.
Had a 16 plate TTS Roadster from new for a year, 10,000 miles - moved up from a 60 plate (tuned ~ 270hp) 2.0TFSI roadster.
The RS wasn't out at the time.
Chopped it in for a new S5 about a year ago - 6 years of roadster driving was starting to prove impractical (can't take friends anywhere, constantly managing holiday luggage (we like to drive in Europe), practicality, blah, blah, blah...)
Also, being a 16, it had the six-speed DSG (not the 7 in current models) - 80 mph on m-way ~ 3300 rpm which was wearing on long drives.
Unless you live somewhere with empty roads, the only benefit of the RS I suspect would be the noise! The TTS sounds ok from the outside, but if you turn off (or even disable) the "Soundaktor" fake noise, it's not the most exciting inside (don't get me wrong, it's better than a 1.6 Focus.....).
The TTS is so markedly faster in the real world than 99% of road traffic that overtaking anything was dead easy.
If I had to choose now for my own 2nd car use (ha!, luxury I don't have), I'd spec up a TTS (roadster again) with all the toys, rather than an RS, for the same reason I don't need an RS5 - I have rarely ever used full throttle, foot to the floor in the S5, so the extra power would make no real difference in the real world.

...should add - the Mk3 is measurably better in all regards than a Mk2 - If you have the ability to choose, I wouldn't consider the Mk2.The RS wasn't out at the time.

TTS still uses the 6 speed S Tronic; they sound quite good actually. Got a nice little burble to them under load.
Thought they were going to the 7-speed twin plate DSG - obviously not, then.Think they sound better from outside;-)

AIUI the Mk3 is a different floorpan to the Mk2 and consequently feels a lot stiffer. Noticeably so.
I like the tech and, unlike the BMW, I found it easy to find my way around. Tbh I'd have preferred a V6, but overall there's not much about it I don't like - apart from the dreadful reversing lights and slightly flaky matrix LEDs.
The exhaust noise in the vids sounds louder in the car.

Yup, weird they didn't change when S3 did. I've no idea what the reason behind that is.
This. There was a lot of chat / supposition on a TT specific forum which I used to be on, that when the new S3 came out, TTS would get the same (logical) powertrain as that & the Golf R; must have been to the point of myth becoming truth.JonChalk said:

The noise in the RS is monstrous definitely. Does the TTS have sooundaktor? I thought it was actual real engine noise just amplified via sound proofing? Doesn't the BMW have actual fake noise through the speakers? The RS wasn't out at the time.

Fair enough, does make sense but the styling of the TTRS is something I do like.
Also your video of you revving, it sounds very nice actually.
So are all TTS's 6 spd and RS's 7 spd??
